Breastfeeding

Another FTM question

Hi again, everyone was super helpful with my last question so I thought I would ask another. My LO was initially down 11% from his birth weight at 4 days and by 8 days he was back to birth weight exactly. He has always leaned toward really short feeds of 8-12 min on one side with either nothing on other side or 3-4 min. Prior to him being weighed, I would do everything to keep him awake or get him to latch again to try to get 13-15 min total at least. This makes it hard to feed on demand because I feel like I am always forcing him to eat. I usually wake him to eat every 2-3 hours. He usually doesn't wake or cue to feed on his own. Now that he is at his birth weight, should I just accept these short feeds and allow him to try to wake on his own as long as it's not more than 3 hours maybe 4 at night? Or should. I keep trying to wake him and keep him awake? Thanks in advance for your help! Oh and just for example, today he has done 9 feeds ( 7 pm now) so far. The last 6 were all 6-8 min and only one side. He was cluster feeding mid day for 4 of these feeds ( every hour) then I just woke him after three hours and he only did eight minutes before falling asleep. Overnight, he did feed longer 15-20 min but they were spaced closer to 4 hours.

  • It's hard to do weighed feelings around here. There is not any lactation support in my area. The hospital I delivered at doesn't have one either. There are LLL meetings, but only once per month and it happened the day I delivered. Maybe I will just try weighing him in a few days to see how he is doing. It is nerve wracking being so unsure how he was doing. Diaper counts have been great so far, 8 wet diapers and 5 dirty diapers. Although today is the first day in have tried letting him lead the feeds some

  • DD was always a quick eater, never more than 10 minutes on one side and then done. And 10 minutes was tops.

As others have said, check that he seems content, has good output, and continues to gain well.
