My vacuum broke last weekend and I need to replace it. The one I had was specifically for pet hair and while I loved it, I'm looking for suggestions on a powerful vac that will attack the pet fur of a dog and 2 cats. Thanks!
We have/had a Dyson. Not worth the money. The power switch and the button to turn the brush off/on are right next try to each other and the brush keep cutting out. We borrowed a Shark from a friend and it works so much better than the Dyson. We have the model that isn't specifically for pets but there have been no problems picking up hair from one long coat dog and two short coat dogs. It's the Shark Lift Away model.
We use the irobot pet roomba, what I love about it is I just hit a button and it vacuums for me. I end up letting it run 2-3 times a week and it keeps the house spotless (why not when it does the work for you)
Sometimes costco has them for $299
Add: we have the Dyson ball too, no complaints other than I'm lazy and don't use it anymore . It was a great vacuum
We bought a refurbished Dyson Animal off Amazon a few years ago and I love it!!
We had a Hoover something before, I vacuumed our family room 3 times with it, then we had it professionally steam cleaned and then received our Dyson the following day. I still had to vacuum 3 more times before it stopped picking up cat hair. It's seriously awesome at getting up all the pet hair.
We just got a Shark, and I really like it a lot. I bought it using money I got for Christmas, and it's my favorite "Christmas" present. I never thought that I would claim a vacuum as my number one Christmas gift. I'm such a mom.
My dream "vacuum" is a Rainbow Cleaning System. Someday I hope!
But we have a Shark which came highly recommended by my step-mom who owned a dyson for years. She owns her own house cleaning business so her vacuums see a lot of action. I like the Shark but nothing compares to a Rainbow lol
I have horrific allergies to pretty much anything that can be inhaled. I also have to deal with pet hair - not only from my small rabbit but from many friends who have cats who come over covered in hair, then leave it on my couch when they sit.
I love to death my Hoover pet vacuum. Certainly there are more expensive vacuums out there, but this Hoover model does the exact same things as my friend's $1000 pet vacuum, and is much more versatile for the rest of the house.
Good luck on your vacuum search!
I have the Hoover pet and HATE it. We have 2 dogs and 2 cats, and that damn thing clogs pretty much every time I use it (and I vacuum AT LEAST once a week). My H even had to take it apart one time to get the clogs out. Just to add the other side to this story.
eta: fml, quotebox suckage, fail.

Thanks all! This has helped a ton because while choosing a vacuum may not seem like a big thing, I like hearing feedback from actual users prior to purchasing most "bigger" items.
Just after finding out about the baby, DH and I decided to invest in the Dyson animal hair vacuum and LOVE it- we have the canister version, not the standup one and are really happy with it. I don't find it heavy and love that we can switch from carpet to hardwood floors with a quick push of a button right on the handle. Love that it's bagless and easy to empty - small apartment and empty it after 5-6 uses... attachment for couch is awesome. Definitely expensive but at least the Bed Bath and Beyond coupon helped to save a few bucks when we purchased it. I've got one very large 17 lb long hair cat and I will do anything to try to prevent allergies in my LO when she arrives and already fear all of the cat hair I'll find stuck to her onsie after a long day. Ick.

I have this one too. We don't have pets, but DH sheds a lot, I have long hair which has been known to strangle vacuum cleaners, and we live in an area where you really need to vacuum a lot due to dust, pollen, and bits of nature. Plus, occasionally people bring over their animals. Pros: for its price range it's much better than other vacuums I've had; we've had it 3 years and it still seems fine; it takes my hair in stride; it has good corner-cleaning attachments. Cons: when we bought it we lived in an apartment with wall-to-wall carpeting, but we moved into our house with hardwood in September and it really doesn't work as well on the hardwood (the vacuum's exhaust moves the dirt particles around and you have to chase them, or sweep first); it doesn't have great extension, like if you want to vacuum way under the bed or the ceiling moulding.
I have a Dyson animal and agree with the PP. It's really not worth the $600. The part that comes out to use as a handheld is awkward to use. It is also overall a very heavy vaccum which sucks being on 2 floors. had $50 hoovers in the past that were just as good.
The handheld part is the most annoying part of this vacuum. Otherwise it is a good vacuum but agree that it is not worth the money.
I've got the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser. It worked really well for about 2 years and then crapped out. In the same boat as OP now looking for something that will last a little bit longer
I have a Kenmore vacuum and love it. I prefer bags because I felt like the canister types always filled up too fast. I've had it for quite a few years, maybe seven. It is still going strong and has a great suction. It is one of the higher end ones, though, but still less than a dyson.

I got a Shark vaccum, the white one, for Mothers Day. It does a great job! However, my favorite feature is that it was bought by a husband that likes to vaccum so I rarely have to actually vaccum the house myself.
We have a Bissell and it seems to work great with the dog hair. We have a golden retriever and a husky/lab mix that average about 90 lbs each. Also a long haired dachshund. We just find that every few times we have to clean out the filter and just keep the vacuum maintenanced. There are clogs, but we can't afford a super expensive vacuum cleaner now that can handle all of the dog hair.
We have a Dyson as well... The thing is amazing. We have a black pug and she seriously sheds everywhere. It's kind of disgusting how much dog hair is in there when we empty it.
Thanks again all!! Your input has helped immensely. We'll be heading out to Target (and other places) this weekend to purchase one.
Side story - just because I'm bored... in addition to our vacuum we had a Dust-Buster (that wasn't great but did the trick for quick little jobs). Well this morning, I dropped both my blush and bronzer on the tile floor, which as you can imagine, broke into little pieces and colored dust everywhere. I asked H to get the Dust-Buster to clean it up and he says "I threw it out yesterday. Damn thing didn't work." Umm.. ok! So now we have blush and bronzer in a nice little pile in a corner of the bathroom... maybe that trip to Target will be happening tonight...
We bought a Kirby off Craigslist that had been used twice. Normally Kirby's are outrageously priced but you can find some good deals on Craigslist. I love my Kirby! I grew up with them too and they've always done a great job. Don't get suckered into a Kirby salesman though...way overpriced.

@katiebartton - does the roomba really work? We've been wanting one for a while. Our dog is 100 lb border collie/husky mix. Do you think it could handle the workload
ugabamafans we have 2 dogs mind you their combined weight is 45lbs but yes i think it would handle it. Because the unit is so easy to use and there is no real involvement except maybe emptying the litle compartment at every use (which takes 5 seconds i just pick it up pull out the tray and dump in the trashcan and hit the go button, which ends up taking less time than unraveling a powercord on a regular vacuum) i say its amazing. we havent touched our dyson since. i really hate vacuming and feel as if its almost a workout soo. with this little unit i let it run almost every other day instead of letting the hair pile up over a weeks time.
it obviously doesnt do stairs but i'd think that is pretty obvious LOL although if you read reviews on amazon the bad ones are silly statements about how it wont do stairs. Its really smart and if it ever gets caught on something (like curtains i forget on the floor) it will just turn itself off and tell you so you can go over and move whatever is blocking it before actually sucking it up.
I have a Kenmore progressive and love it. You could get a refurb at a sears repair center usually. I also have the room a 650 and love it but I still need vacuum with my other vac occasionally. I have 1 dog and 2 cats. The Kenmore has a great hardwood floor attachment. I haven't swept in years. I suggest looking at consumer reports to help you out.

I so wanted a Dyson but can't afford one.
I have 3 cats, a jack Russell and a golden retriever. Lots of hair!!! Awesome vacuum. So much lighter than my old one too.
Hubby used it for the first time last week and said it worked really well. I have a bad back so my last one killed me. This one is awesome.
It also came w a free steam mop.
Highly recommend a Shark!!!
kicked the bucket this weekend and I'm in the market for a new one.
This is the one I just got w a free steam mop.
