Eff you glucose test

I took a 2 hour test yesterday morning after failing my one hour.

Fasting blood test = normal

One hour = failed [again] by 5 points

Two hour = normal

They told me I am officially considered to have GD and I have to make an appointment with an endocrinologist. I thought that you had to have two abnormal results to be considered GD but this office told me that no, I only had to fail one.

I know a lot of people here failed their one hour, but has anyone else failed their 2 or 3 hour GTT?

  • I did and it really bummed me out. But then I got over it and realized it wasn't anything I did. I usually eat a low carb diet so I mostly have to be mindful of spacing my meals out. It's alright lady, you aren't alone.

  • If all you have to do is fail one, then what's the point of even having a second one?

I just got the call today that I failed my 1 hour.
So I have to go back next week for the 3 hour and sit in misery while they draw blood once an hour, 4 times.
So I definitely feel for you :(

I asked this - the nurse said that they changed the criteria about a year ago. And thanks @empireceo . I'm not that upset and it'll probably do me good to have my diet monitored. It's just annoying.
  • Not yet but I just took the 3 hour today - so I guess I will find out early next week.

  • I failed the 1 hr then passed the fasting, she said i hardly failed the first time so she said i was fine.she has been doing random sugar tests when i come in,but all has been fine.i agree whats the point of doing another test if all you gotta do is fail one.hang in there, with my last i failed 1 hr and passed 3 hr.
  • I only took and failed the 1 hour. I failed bad enough that another test wasn't needed.
I remember you saying you had some crazy number!
  • Just got the call that I failed mine as well. Really? The one thing I wasn't overly concerned about? My number was 149 :(
  • Took my glucose 1 hour today... I felt awful after drinking that stuff! I'm sorry you had to take another one.

i failed the one hour with a 183, and then passed the three hour, so you might still be fine.

I didn't mind the drink (lime flavored). Growing up I went to a camp that served "bug juice". It was this super sweet syrup that came in huge jugs in all different flavors and it was the best! The drink reminded me of bug juice that hadn't been watered down enough.

For me the worst part was sitting in a chair for that long - my back and tailbone were screaming the entire time.
  • Thanks. I hate needles and am dreading the multiple blood draws! I think my husband should have to get poked a few times just because.
  • I failed the 1 and 3 hr my first pg- but I failed 2/3 of the test I too thought that was still the parameters.
Like pp said once you get rollin with checking your sugars it's pretty easy to maintain and I think it really helped me keep my weight from getting away from me. It takes a few weeks to kinda get used to counting carbs and seeing what works for you. My bible was a book called the Calorie King. It's small and fits in your purse and has almost any food and restaurant nutrition info you'd need! Totally helped me. Good luck!
  • I failed and have GD, I'm still waiting on hearing from the dietician. But I began eating low carbs and low/no sugars. For the first time, I'm hungry all the time due to low carbs. When I finally see the dietician, I'll ask what I can do!

My OB referred me to an endocrinologist who is getting me in tomorrow. I'd think maybe eating smaller meals or more high protein snacks more frequently throughout the day? We'll see what the dr says tomorrow.
  • Booooo!

No experience, just offering some love :)
  • I'm sorry, that really sucks. I hope that the endocrinologist can get you more information. :) How did everything go with the OB you met on friday?

  • @alphalyrae I LOVE LOVE LOVE the practice! It's in Port Jeff and it's really small and personal. I'm really wishing that I've been going there all along :)

Conversely, my 1 hour number was 143 and I failed the 3 hour. Boooooo.

  • Crossing my fingers to pass. Sitting in the waiting room for my test now.
  • Just got the call that I didn't pass the second blood draw (but the other two were great). They're sending me in to see the GD counselor. F you, GTT.
  • I'm still waiting to hear my results. Took the 3hr on Monday and I know the results have been at the docs office since yesterday at least. But no call and it hasn't been reviewed by the doc yet so the nurse won't tell me the results.

I'm hoping that's actually good news- like it wasn't flagged for immediate review so maybe I passed? I'm hopeful.

I am the exact same way! i won't say it didn't suck, but honestly it wasn't as bad as i expected it to be. and this is coming form someone who used to have to take anxiety meds before needles pre-pregnancy. i think the time i spent dreading it before hand was way worse than when it actually happened.
