Recommend your vacuum

Care to recommend your vacuum?

I have an upright Kenmore Progressive that just doesn't do the best job anymore. It's also very heavy, which is a major pain. I have two cats, so I need something that will be good on pet hair. I also have original hardwood floors that need to be treated gently lest they fall completely the fuck apart.

So, any recommendation? I've read mixed reviews about the Dyson Animal (from Consumer Reports and Amazon reviews).

    Seriously what are the negative reviews saying?  Because I've had my Dyson for almost 8 years now and it works just as well as the day I brought it home, which is to say, amazingly.
    Consumer Reports said it was only fair on pet hair, but it was a specific kind of dyson.

    I just bought the DC41 Animal (it's on closeout now, so not too bad on price). I don't know that I love it, I like it. I was kind of expecting it to pull up a bunch of nasty stuff from our old vacuum, but it wasn't anything crazy, but maybe the old one wasn't as bad as I thought it was? We had a Bissell, but it was a cheapy and it sounded like it was going to explode and DH and I have been eyeing a new vacuum for a while now and decided to invest in the Dyson. It does a decent job of picking up dog hair (we have a chocolate lab and tan carpet), I haven't noticed anything it doesn't get. The handle extension is my only complaint, to me it's awkward, it's not really flexible, if I try hard enough I can get the couch and stuff but it's not like my other vacuums that you just pull the flexible hose and get in there. Maybe it will get easier the more I use it? It is great for getting the ceiling by our ceiling fan, the dust collects up there (vaulted ceiling) and I don't need a step stool or anything to reach it.

    We've had the Dyson Animal for about 4 years and works fantastic. I fill it up 2-3 times each time I vacuum. We have a long haired dog and it tackles it all.

    I think it's worth the extra money.

    I have the dyson animal with the ball. I love it. I used to have rabbits and the hay would choke other vacuums. It's also easy to clean and maintain.

    Another vote for Dyson. I've had mine for 6 years. Its the cannister model and does a good job on hardwood floors and our areas rugs. We have two cats. When I am done vaccuming I have enough cat hair to make another cat :)
