2 year old saying a naughty word.

I am wondering if anyone here has dealt with their toddler saying a naughty word? I don't think he even knows what it means, because he doesn't use it in any certain context, but I hear him say it when he's playing in his room and tonight he said it at his grandma's house. I think he got a reaction out of me when he said it the first few times so he thinks it's funny. I've tried ignoring him when he says it hoping he would forget, but he hasn't! I've tried putting him in time out... Doesn't work! Any info would help! I don't want him to say it at toddler time or at church

I have a sailor mouth, and DS1 has surprisingly only absorbed 1 swear word so far (damnit). I have to really stop myself from reacting because it's hilarious and he always uses it in appropriate context. But when he says it I have a calm conversation with him about how that is a grown up word and it's not appropriate for him to use, and then we practice kid-safe alternatives. When he started saying "oh my God!" (And I have no idea where that came from) we practiced saying "Oh my gosh!" and "Oh my peas!" He seems to like his alternate phrases better anyway now that he knows them.

My son picked up "goddamn it" from my mother who dropped a dish in the kitchen. He was in the next room but my dad and uncle snickered so he got a reaction. We ignore and it's faded.

I hear it occasionally and in proper context. Sometimes he will say it out of the blue with a big grin to try and get a reaction. We just ignore and it's going away.

My DD picked up "shit" from me and she definitely knows how to use it. I tell her we say "shoot" which she'll usually say instead and I try to work on it too. But honestly, I just give her a better alternative and then ignore. She is doing it for a reaction so if she doesn't get one there is no point to continue with it.

DD also went through this phase, and I think it was right around 2. I had dropped something in the kitchen and said "Shit!". Next thing I knew, DD dropped one of her toys and said the same word. This was the child who was evaluated by EI for speech, but she surely said shit clear as a bell and used it appropriately! Like the pps we ignored it, stopped reacting and making a big deal out of it, and eventually it passed. Thank goodness b/c I was terrified she was going to start our church's preschool and get booted for cursing!

If he's not using the word appropriately (in context) he might be trying to say anither word and it comes out as the cuss word. Otherwise, if ignoring it doesn't work, I'd have sit him down and have a heart to heat. Good luck!

oh DS has picked up a few cuss words between DH and I..

We sit him down and tell him that those are words he's not allowed to use. It takes a few times, but then again DH and I are not the best we both got potty mouths

I told DS that it's a grown up word and not one for children. He has not said it since!
Butt isn't as bad as what he said but I tell him that is a conjunctive which connects 2 other words. Insert examples.

I really dislike it when he says butt! Lol
