Leg Casting For LO

Hi Parenting, I’m not much of an active posted and have not posted on this board before. But thought I would try for the broadest audience in hope that someone here has gone through leg casting before.

LO is 9 months old and will begin treatment for Metatarsus Adductus (Pigeon toe) on Friday. The treatment is a round of leg casts. The casts will go from his toes to his thighs, on both legs, and will be changed for repositioning once a week for four week.

The doctor has given us very little idea of what to expect, as far as activities he’ll be able to do.  He has been standing for a while and is just starting to cruise along the side of his play yard, so I know he is going to be frustrated with the lack of mobility.

The doctor says babies adapt to the cast quickly, but I was wondering if anyone’s LO has gone through this before? What activities could they still do? I plan to go out tomorrow and get some new toys for him to play with while sitting, but I have a feeling the next month will be a long one.

DS had the exact same thing. He's a twin and his foot got stuck in a funny spot while in utero. He had two casts for 1 week each. He wore his orthopedic shoes while he slept for about 4-5 months. He was about 6 mo old when we started. The only thing we had to change was his baths to keep the cast dry. He's 8 and had no further foot issues. ETA: DS only had one foot affected. I hope it's an easy process for you both.

  • My nephew has been in and out of a cast for 2 years. I think the biggest challenge for my sister has been bath time. He adapts so quickly it is amazing.

  • Thanks for the kind words and support! I think the anticipation is making me freak out, we just have no idea how he’ll react and I’m expecting the worst. But who knows he may just power through it, it a small moment in the scheme  of life. I realize more and more when we leave our appointments at Children’s Hospital how lucky we are.
