Anyone have their tubes tied??

Hey, parenting!  I used to be a semi-regular poster here (I still lurk), but now spend most of my time on the A14 board.  This isn't really a question for over there, so I thought I would come back to here to ask.

I had planned on getting my tubes tied after this LO.  I am having a RCS and it just seemed to make the most sense, since I would already been there on the table and all.  Anyways, I have started to hear horror stories from women who have had their tubes tied.  Everything from issues with their hormones, blood pressure, and heavy and painful cycles.

Has anyone on this board had their tubes tied and can share their experiences?  Of course, I plan on talking to my doctor about this more in depth (I only have mentioned to her I wanted this done) and doing a little research on my own, but I wanted to ask here to see if I could get some stories.  Thanks!

  • My mom had her tubes tied. She'd always have problems with her periods. Heavy painful so on. Had no idea that could've been from her tubal after my younger brother. I'm gonna ask her when I get the chance if it got worse after. I might just have DH get snipped when the time comes. I think he even mentioned it makes more sense. He's a great guy if he'll actually follow through lol. But we might go for another before I get much older so that'll wait. Good luck with whatever you decide op.

  • I lurk here and haven't posted anything before so forgive me for just jumping in. I had ds in July 2013. I had a rcs and had my tubes tied then. In my experience my periods have been much more heavier and I have had more clots now than ever before. (Sorry for tmi) Not sure if it is due to having my tubes tied but that is just what happened to me since having it.

my sister also had her tubes tied after her 3rd and experienced the same things I mentioned plus lots of bad cramping. She ended up having a hysterectomy in January because she couldn't handle it anymore.

Everyone is different and our bodies respond differently to things. Have you talked to your doctor about your concerns?

I had mine done in Nov '12.  I had the surgery separately, no C-section.  I have experienced absolutely no side effects from the surgery, or afterwards.

I am not for, or against it, but you can find pros and cons for both the tubals and vasectomy, so do not let some horror stories be the only thing that affects your decision.

  • I had it done during my RCS.  My periods are definitely heavier than before but there are two caveats to that.  One is that I had Mirena for about 2 years prior to becoming pregnant with DS2 and I have virtually no period so it's pretty likely it's not THAT bad but I'm totally not used to it.  Also, my doctor warned me that many women complain of heavier or "different" cycles after the surgery but that our cycles naturally tend to change in our 30s, which happens to coincide with the age at which women have their tubes tied.

I'm thinking of having it done separately. DH is completely against a vasectomy and since I can't hold a gun to his head, I think I might just do it. I'm wondering what that entails since I won't already be opened up with a c/s. I wanted to get one after DD, but I delivered in a Catholic hospital.
I had two incisions.  One near my belly button, and one right above my pelvis.  Very small.  Day surgery, hurt like a SOB the first night, but they gave me morphine, so that helped.  There was no weight restrictions, but you aren't going to want to pick a toddler up for a few days.  And I walked kind of hunched over for a few days.

I have actually had better menstrual flows but that was because whenever I used birth control it would totally mess my body up, so now that I have no chemicals in my body, I am evened out, and everything is way more predictable so to speak.

  • I'm so glad you posted this!  I'm scheduled to have mine tied during my RCS in May.  I had read a lot of the same things you have about Post Tubal Syndrome.  I'm still going through with it b/c we are definitely done and it doesn't make sense to have DH do a separate procedure when I'm already there and open.

I figure more people are going to post about their bad experiences than the TONS of women who have had them done and had no issues.  It's nice to hear that most on here haven't had any issues.  :)

How young were you?  I am definitely thinking of having my tubes tied when I have a RCS with our next baby.  I will be 30, hopefully when that time comes.

I was 30!! Not that young at all to decide I was done having kids. IMO

ETA: they (I asked more than one dr at the practice) that I may want more kids if things don't work out between DH & myself. Um... squeezeme? 1) did they know we were even fighting? 2) nope. still wouldn't want more kids!!

Ummm..how is it that they get to make that decision????
    hence the "fuck you doc"
  • I had mine done after 2 kids when I was 24 year old, the only problem I had was undissove stitches that was really painful and the nurse wouldn't take them out so I did take them out myself but there is still 2 of them over 1 year later so I need to get that checked.

  • I had mine done August 2012 when I had my twins. My periods have been heavier but that is probably just because I was on bcp before. Other than that I've had no issues.

  • Seriously, how the fuck do people find these zombie threads? Search the bump for "tubes tied" so you can share your story? So weird.

Haha. I didn't even look at the date!
