Which do you use?

We go generic. It's 15 dollars cheaper at our grocery store.

Re: Formula users: Brand name or generic

  • I'm really curious about this. We currently use name brand, but I have noticed the store brand is less expensive. (Especially at Sam's Club) Is there a difference? Everything is FDA approved, right?

  • Yeah about fda. Neither of my kids has ever shown any sensitivity or intolerance to generic formula. We have used different kinds (target, Wal-Mart) and they ate and pooped the same.
  • We are EBF this time but last time we had to supplement with formula and I used the Similac equivalent UP & UP brand from Target. The kiddo had no changes in poop, gas, or behavior switching between the name brand Similac and the Up&Up. He didn't explode.

  • I wish we could use generic brands but DS's pedi said it's not recommended in his situation. So we're using similac.

  • We are currently EBF, but we will switch at some point, so we will do the same as we did with DD and use Wegmans formula, assuming he doesn't have any sort of a reaction.

  • With DS1., after we stopped using the enfamil AR for reflux we used generic.

  • We used generic for DD1 and have so far with DD2...haven't seen a difference or a problem.

@chuggingwater- did your doctor suggest Enfamil AR or did you just give it a shot? Did you notice improvement? My doctor is kind of against medicating for reflux unless in severe cases but DD2 definitely has reflux and isn't thrilled with it...is it worth trying?

We are now using Ele Care which is prescription only. We used the brand name Similac Alimentum because our boy has tummy issues already and I don't want any difference in formulation to aggravate it.

  • I picked Special snowflake :) we're enfamil now with the Gerber soothe drops. After his next pedi appt well either switch to Target formula or to Gerber soothe formula.

Butting in to say I switched DS to the AR formula and it dramatically decreased his spit up! We were using gentlease. He is a lot more gassy now but isn't uncomfortable, and only spits up like once a day now versus with every meal. He also isn't choking and coughing on his reflux anymore. I recommend it :)

  • I supplement and I use enfamil newborn. We get it free so that's why I use it. Otherwise, I've heard the target brand is really good if you are looking for a generic.

  • SS:  For now, my baby is supposed to have a very specific formula to help him gain weight faster. However, he just finished a world-record growth spurt, and at his next checkup I suspect the doctor will tell me regular formula is fine now, at which point I'll see how he does on a generic.

Preemie formula is freaking expensive, and there aren't many sales, coupons or bulk discounts out there.
  • We are using brand name for now (enfamil) but I will maybe switch to generic at some point. H is weird about using generic stuff...H doesn't like to use generic for anything, but I don't mind using it...so he isn't thrilled with the idea of using generic formula.

  • When we switch to formula, we'll use Similac Sensitive ready to feed just like we did with the other kids. All of them hated powder and generic.

  • generic here!
  • When we use formula, I use either similac sensitive or target's version of it. We have had no issues.

  • I'm starting to introduce Alimentum by Similac bc of her protein intolerance. I'm over BFing now....too much of a guessing game and my daughter is miserable. Our family can't function like this anymore!

I'm using the similac and enfamil free samples for now. But I once those are gone, Kirkland (Costco) formula it will be as it was for my other kids .
