January 2014 Moms

No wonder LO is hungry all the time.

I pumped last night since I felt engorged when DD slept through her MOTN feeding and got 2 oz from each breast. Just now I pumped since she again slept through another feeding and only got 1 ounce from each side. At night all she wants to do is eat. She is gaining weight ok but I still wonder if she is really getting enough. *sigh* DD is 3 weeks old and I pretty sure she went through her growth spurt last week when all she did was eat and cry.

  • There's a growth spurt at 7-10 days and around 3 weeks. Those are averages, so it's possible your LO hit the first spurt late or the second spurt early. Just keep feeding on demand as much as possible.

  • The amount you can pump is not indicative of the amount You produce and what your baby gets from nursing. If she is gaining weight on track and has the appropriate # of wet diapers, you're producing enough. Especially since you say you wake up engorged.

She could be comfort nursing. Is she spitting up a lot? Does she fall asleep nursing? And the growth spurt thing does make a difference.

  • Echoing not to trust the pump as a gauge of your supply. I had an over supply in the beginning and DD still wanted to nurse constantly. Your LO could also be pacifying on you as well. It took me a little while to notice the different feeling of nursing vs. soothing and not eating.

If the diaper output is where it should be that's a good way to tell and then you can also (like others said) go for a weighted feeding if you're still very concerned.

  • Thanks ladies. Her diaper out put is okay and her weight gain is good. She passed her birth weight in the first week and gained another 4 ounces by her second week. We have a really great breastfeeding group at one of the local hospitals. The LC's there helped me with my latch but I haven't been able to make it lately because SO has my car since his is being worked on. I'm going to see if my mom can take me tomorrow though.
@katags DD spits up maybe once a day and always falls asleep while nursing. I let her nurse until she pulls off even when she falls asleep. sometimes she will wake when I try to burp her but usually she doesn't.

I'm in the same boat - LO is producing plenty of diapers and gaining weight, but when I try to pump I get maybe an ounce total. NBD for now, but what happens when I go back to work in two months? I need to learn how to make my boobs work with the pump!

ETA: sorry to hijack with my own issue - it's clearly been weighing on me!
  • NBD @HigginsBDog we all have questions. I was wondering the same thing. I babysit at home and am not sure how BFing will work even though the parents are okay with it.
