Home improvement/ landscaping help

So we have decided to do some home repairs with our tax return. I would LOVE to put up a privacy fence and to put in two new patio doors. One of ours currently doesn't open. And the other one is a bitch to get open. Both are sliding doors. I am also wanting to put a few tree's or shrubs in our yard. On the corner of our house we use to have a tall evergreen like tree that died and we had to cut it down. I want to replace it. Also we have a bare spot in front of the house that i think would look better with some shrubs or tall grass or something.

Does anyone have any input? Types or doors or fencing or plants? Do you have any of the above? Pro's Con's?

  • Our lot is about 1/2 an acre. I just want to fence in our backyard. I know what you mean about feeling watched. We moved to town from the country (10 acres) and i feel shell shocked. I feel like anytime I am gardening or playing with DS that everyone is watching (in reality they aren't i'm sure). Also i would like to keep my dogs in the back. We have wireless fencing system now but they bark at everything that moved on the street.

  • How big is your backyard? Or do you know how much acreage you sit on?

We also want to finish up the fencing in our backyard. It's about half done which is comprised of our adjacent back & side neighbors' fences. I can't stand it being so open. I feel like I'm being watched. Lol
With that being said, fencing is looking like it's going to be expensive. We're looking into a standard wood one. Panels just a few months ago were like $22 a panel (6x8) & now it's up to over $40. I'm thinking the seasons are to blame for that. When all the snow melts & we're actually in nicer weather, we're going to get an exact estimate but if wood fence ends up being astronomical, we're planning on doing chain link & then just getting the privacy panels, they look pretty nice.
I had thought of this but DH said no. We have a friend who is a contractor he said if we buy the materials that he will install it at half his normal price. So this is a plus!
  • You may want to check with the city/town/township before putting up a fence to be sure there aren't regulations on the type of fence that you can put up. In my subdivision, we're only allowed to put up wrought iron or aluminum fences but some of our neighboring subdivisions are allowed to do chainlink or privacy. It may not be the case depending on where you live but thought I'd offer that.

Also, in terms of the landscaping itself, you could get a company to come out and draw up a design for you. Even if you don't want them to do it, they usually leave a copy of the estimate with you so you could use it as a guide if you like it. We ended up actually having a landscaper do ours but it occurred to me afterward that, if we had wanted to do it ourselves, we could've just used the diagram and did it ourselves (but we both knew that it would never get done!).

This is a great idea!! I would want to do it myself but it would be nice for someone who knew what they were doing to plan it out :)

We do not have any restrictions. I have already called and checked. We just need to call dig rite to come out and mark buried cables ect. I was glad to hear we wouldn't have any hoops to jump through!
  • For your two sliding doors, they very well may just need a good cleaning/some grease. Can you take the doors out and clean out the tracks?
That's what I'd do, but that's just me- I'd rather fix things if possible before considering replacing. I watch a lot of DIY shows and Mike Holmes and such. A lot of that stuff is way easier to do than it seems.

The track pieces are actually broke on the one door DH looked at it. And the other one that doesn't open DH specifically wants french doors. I personally would like french doors in both spots. Our house is about 30 years old and i am sure those doors are original. I think it's just time to replace them :(
