Spreadable butter

If you buy the easy spread butter, do you buy the kind with olive oil or canola oil...? If you've bought both, is there a taste difference?

Re: Spreadable butter

  • ^ I don't like leaving butter out, it gets a funny taste to me almost after a day. I'm butter sensitive or something.  And I get the canola one, I've never tried the olive oil one.

Huh, that's interesting. I've kept it out my whole life, tastes normal to me!

Butter does absorb smells, but I imagine it's just as likely to do that in the fridge. I don't leave butter out usually because DH is a weirdo about it, so I get the Canola oil one. Never tried the olive oil.

I don't like leaving it out either. I was buying the LoL whipped butter, but it's a pain to spread unless it's out for a while. So I bought the canola spread kind, but wondered if the olive oil one was "better."

  • I probably like butter a little too much, but to me there is a slight difference in taste between the two. It's not much, maybe less sweet is the best way to describe it. I probably wouldn't use the one with olive oil on my bagels or toast for breakfast but would use it on bread at dinner or for cooking.

  • My parents use olivio and they love it. I hate butter. I leave it in the fridge & IF I'm baking I usually put it in the micro for 8 seconds & it softens up. I don't use it a lot. DH always says we need a butter dish. I'm like nah haha
  • I buy the one with canola oil.....I'm not sure I ever noticed there was one with olive oil.  I almost hate buying it because we use a lot more butter when we have that available, but I got tired of spreading hard butter.

  • My mom always left it, so I did too. DH thought that was gross and would only use the stuff from the fridge.

For spreadable, we use canola oil.

@chapter79 is it salted or unsalted? Salted is fine to leave out because of the salt. Unsalted tastes terrible.
    Salted.
I know it's fine, but I don't like the taste after a day or two? My mom has always said I'm nuts, she leaves hers out. And I won't eat butter at her house. I'm really prone to noticing little differences in foods, I think I have a super power tongue.

  • Just finished my breakfast with spreadable butter with canola oil. I think it's milder than the olive oil.

  • I use the canola oil one. I use butter so infrequently, so I would never buy butter and leave it out. I don't even butter mine or DS's toast. I use it here and there in a pan but, just not often enough fight with hard butter from the fridge.

  • Those that do leave it out how long do you leave butter out? I could see us leaving it out and always forgetting to refrigerate it again.

    We buy canola oil ones.

  • Growing up the butter was always in the refrigerator---I guess I just assumed butter had to be refrigerated--like other dairy.

  • The package of butter says to keep refrigerated. In our house growing up, our butter was always out in a butter dish in the cupboard, though. Now we usually keep it in the fridge unless I know I'm going to want soft butter for something for a few days (like on the weekend I made banana bread, so I left the butter out for a few days so I could have soft butter with it).

It depends on the temperature of your house a bit. We used to leave our butter out, but one summer I remember it started going bad after a few days so we started putting it in the fridge. We buy unsalted, though, so I think that's a factor too.

  • Question: I've never bought butter that had any kind of oil in it. What makes this spreadable butter "butter" and not margarine?

  • my grandmothers used to leave butter out in a dish, but they would use it fairly quickly. we hardly ever use it so it stays in the fridge. if i'm putting it on italian bread, i'll put it on the warm bread, let it sit for a couple of minutes, then spread it.
  • We use the land o' lakes spreadable, and I have bought both.  However, I can't say that I have paid much attention to how they taste, other than buttery.  : )  We like them both apparently.

It's just butter whipped with canola oil or olive oil so it doesn't get as hard in the fridge. Still made from milk fat.

Margarine is typically made from vegetable oil that's hydrogenated so it stays solid at room temperature.
