Tell me about your Dr Browns Bottles

We use Playtex drop-ins right now and LO has some gas/spit up issues.  It may just be normal but I've heard these help so I'm going to try them out.  But I wondered if people preferred the standard or wide-neck and any advice you have on the size of the nipple used.

TIA!

Re: Tell me about your Dr Browns Bottles

  • Im glad you posted this...I use avent bottles but were having gas issues so im thinking about trying dr browns as well. :)
  • Loading the player...
  • I love minethough they are a bit of a pain to clean.  I have old standard one and use size 1 nipples.  If you plan to breastfeed in addition to bottles you want to stay with the smallest nipple  size and never move up. Larger sizes give the liquid quicker but you want baby to work for it so they dont get lazy at the breast.

  • I have the standard old ones. I liked them fine w DS but haven't given DD a bottle yet. We soaked the parts then ran through dishwasher.

@bensmommy518 @rgoblue I am still BFing some (and its all pumped BM), so that's good to know!  Is that the Level1 size then?  I'm guessing not the premie one...

Sounds like LO and I are making a trek to BRU tomorrow!

Edit: Another question:  How many bottles do you have?

  • FWIW: I had a complete First Time Mommy fail with my Dr. Brown's bottle a few weeks ago. I took one with us to feed DS while we were at dinner entirely put together and it leaked completely out and all over the diaper bag.
Lesson Learned: While traveling keep the solid white cap on and put the inside parts/ nipple on when you're ready.

  • We used the standard Dr. Brown's bottles with DS because his reflux was ridiculous. The bottles are a pain in the ass to clean, but we felt like they really made a difference. We still had to burp DS multiple times during a feeding (pulling him off the bottle and burping him in-between ounces), but we felt the flow on the Dr. Brown's bottles were better for him and made a big difference in conjunction with his reflux meds. :)

  • I used the standard ones with DS, so I'm used to that size. I got some pink and purple ones for my DD though. I don't find the parts to be PITA to clean, I just wash them all at the end of the day (I bought 12 bottles) and it takes about 20 mins total.
They really helped with my DS's gas issues so I didn't even try other brands with DD. Another big advantage of Dr brown bottles is that the nipple doesn't collapse mid- feeding.
  • We've used the standard Dr. Brown's for all 4 kids and love them. We've had no issues going back and forth between breast and bottle and they were awesome for my 2 reflux babies.

  • @kellydew09 - thanks for the link!  I even read that a couple of days ago and just completely forgot.  Sad.

  • We use the wide-neck Dr. Browns. I bought some of the standard ones but Julia would take the entire nipple in her mouth and make a big mess. She opens her mouth wide when she eats so the wide-neck bottles work better for her. I actually use these and the Playtex drop-ins bottles. She spits up less with those 2 brands.

  • @rgoblue where did you find the preemie nipples? I looked at target but they only have level 1. I have 1-3 but want to try preemie for the slow flow. I'm terrified DD will refuse breast once she has bottle like DS did.

  • We have the standard and wide neck ones. We haven't used the wide neck ones yet because we have a preemie nipple on ours so it only fits the standard one.

  • We use both the standard sized and wide neck and like them both. And, I have found that they do help.

  • We use the wide neck bottles like we did with DS but since I'm BFing DD we found that even Level 1 nipples were too fast for her. Lansinoh makes a verrrry slow flow nipple that fits in the wide neck bottles and she's done really well with them.

I don't really think it's much extra cleaning since I mostly put it all in the dishwasher.

  • I have the wide neck and will try them tonight now that DS is spitting up more. Here's hoping they work!

  • We have 2 oz and 4 oz bottle, standard size. Premie nipples.

@hmvbaby14 I've done that too. Also, I've forgotten to put the blue piece in and it leaked everywhere.

I had a bottle ready for DH one night and explained how the pieces work. The next morning I saw that he used it without the inserts. He said he didn't even see a difference.

  • We use the standard size at a level 1 nipple. Although we used the preemie nipple for a while just because he was a preemie. We have about 7 bottles but we only really use two because they're only 4 ounces rather than the bigger ones. Also his reflux is a lot less and he hardly spits up anymore. And burping isn't as frequent.

  • I'm probably the opposite of a lot of people here...my LO didn't do to well with the Dr. Browns wide neck, so we switched over to playtex drop ins. Things are only slightly better with her gas and spitting up. Avent bottles did not work at all.

I'm open to suggestions for other bottles to try!
