birth control after baby?

just curious, what are you ladies planning to do for birth control after baby comes? I have been on the pill since I was 18 and I dont want to still be on it, so I was thinking abotu an IUD, but I am trying to decide between the hormone one (mirena) and the non hormone one (paraguard). I am not really crazy about being on hormones for the rest of my life but I have heard you get fewer periods and with paraguard you supposedly get very heavy periods. Anyone have any experience with either, or any insight? What do you plan on doing after LO comes?

Re: birth control after baby?

  • I cannot take anything with estrogen in it, and we are done (I think having kids).

I would opt to have my tubes tied, but I am not ready to make that commitment, I think we will try mirena, and pull and pray :).

I am going to get the  Mirena IUD put in.  I was previously on the pill and want to try breastfeeding, so that option in out for me.  Plus DH and I want to wait a few years before having another baby.
  • I'm having a tubal with this c-section. Between kids, we've used condoms with foam. But the foam really messed up my bladder, and I've had to see a specialist because of the damage the spermicide did to my bladder lining :-( Before my first baby, I used Nuvaring, and I really really liked it.
  • I'll probably do the mini pill again.

  • Probably condoms and charting.  Will be going for #2 pretty quickly, I suspect.

  • I had the mirena after DS and wasn't a big fan. I got the paragard after DD and I like it a lot better. I'll take a little extra bleeding over the crappy hormones.
  • I had Mirena for a little while and it gave me really bad cramps. I switched to paraguard and it was much better. No cramping at all and I only had a couple months of heavy periods, then it got better and my periods were much more normal. If you have only had "pill" periods, even the normal periods will seem heavier, but eventually they do tend to get less heavy.

  • I had Mirena and loved it. No period. It's very low hormone and the hormones don't circulate through your body the same way they do with the pill.

  • I'm all up for the mirena! Going to my next appointment in 2 days and going to talk about when after the baby is a good time to put it in. And with the idea of fewer periods (I have really awful heavy periods. So it would help a lot if I get the mirena) is probably the best one. Unless they suggest something else lol And being young, I need to think about this right now lol

  • We are done after this LO.  Since I am a RCS, I am going to have my tubes tied.

  • I'm going back to the Mirena! I loved it, I had no period for YEARS. BC pills were too confusing because every kind had a new set of symptoms and I've gotten pregnant twice while on them anyways. I never noticed any hormonal issues with the Mirena because it has very little. The only noticeable side effect was weight loss for me, I lost 10 lbs and put it on again when I had it removed. But that wasn't really a bad thing for me in my opinion.

I can't do estrogens due to a blood clotting antigen nor do I like hormones in my body- I tried the mirena believing the claim the progesterone stayed in my uterus- bullshit. I had the exact same symptoms I had when I was on bioidentical progesterone a year before for menstrual issues while on it and then got cysts which no one likes to talk about but it is common side effect. So I went the natural family planing route (basal temps and CM) which worked for 8 months then this peanut defied all the rules and dug in there anyways. So I am toying with the idea of trying the paraguard as it is non hormonal but we absolutely can't afford another baby for at least 2 years. I had normal periods before so if they are heavier that is fine- on the mirena my uterus always felt swollen so if I have that again I may have to bail but we will see. I would love to go
Back to tracking with no unnatural anything in my body but even if I am even more cautious with my unsafe window with breast feeding I know periods are wonky so I have no idea how to track that and I am not going without sexy time...

  • I had a Paraguard IUD for 8 years before this and will have a new one put in. With my paraguard only my first two periods were heavy (and part of that may have been coming off depo). After that I had 3-4 day periods that weren't that bad at all. I like non-hormonal choices that are hard for me to mess up. I am considering the Essure procedure for more permanent birth control but want to give myself some time to make sure it's what I want.
  • We are not going to have any more children (2 and through), as we are older parents but since I am apparently still quite fertile I'm considering the Essure.  What I would really like is for hubby to get a vasectomy, we have talked very briefly about it and he is pretty resistant.  Back to condoms  after DD#2 arrives and then a permanent decision within the year.

I think you should do more research on essure. There have been a lot of problems with it.
  • We used condoms last time until I was done breastfeeding.  I know lots of people hate them, but we didn't mind.  I contemplated the mini-pill, but didn't really want to do with while breastfeeding (it's the slightly irrational crunchy mom in me).

  • I was on the Mirena for 5 years, and I loved it. My periods were very light, I didn't notice anything crazy going on hormonally, and it was so convenient to not have to think about it! After I had the Mirena removed we did condoms for a while until we were ready to start trying. We haven't decided what we are going to do after this baby is born, but I won't have another IUD since having it put in was no picnic and I don't want to go through that if I am not going to leave it in for at least a few years (and I won't be waiting that long to start trying for #2). My midwife strongly recommends getting a diaphram. I guess you have to have them fitted especially for you, so she said she could do that at my post-baby check up. It seems like kind of a hassle, but I guess its really no worse than a condom and you can't feel it when its in... We'll see.
  • I will be having a tubal after this pregnancy

  • I'm hoping to use Nexplanon, an implant in your upper arm. It's progesterone only, so it's fine to use while you're breastfeeding and I used the sister product, Implanon, before TTC and I loved it.
  • I loved my mirena and no periods, cramping, or things to keep track of ever. We're completely done though so hubs is getting snipped.
  • Condoms, cheap (can get about 120 for $3 here), easy, contains the mess (Best bit ever! hehe) and no hormones. Also as this is our first, and I think no 2 wont be far behind, we don't have to worry about weaning off hormones before trying! very convenient.

I was on the pill for 11 years, then found a lump in my breast (turned out to be just fatty tissue). Did some reading and found out a possible side effect of the pill could be lumps - couldn't find concrete evidence either way but decided it wasn't worth the risk.
