Baby nosebleeds

With all the frightfully dry/frigid weather, DD has come down with the occasional nosebleed. Her pedi said it's fairly common and will be sure to check as part of her 1-year appt on Friday, but in the meantime, has instructed us to keep up with the humidifier and put little dabs of vaseline/aquaphor in her nostrils to try and keep the membranes moist. Any other tips??? I had nosebleeds as a kid and ended up needing a cauterization, which was traumatic, so I'm hopeful that DD will heal quickly and these won't be recurrent.

The scary part is they come on suddenly and it's HORRIFYING to see your baby with a face full of blood, though she doesn't seem to be bothered by it at all. If you try and wipe it, she becomes a rabid raccoon and the thrashing does not help the situation!

I'm also looking for laundry tips--I've washed her affected sheets/clothes 3 times with baby oxy and am still struggling to get the blood stains out. I am afraid all of my googling "remove blood stains from clothing" is going to get me on an FBI watch list!

Re: Baby nosebleeds

  • Have you tried Greased Lightning on the blood stains? I have no idea what the hell is in it and I'm afraid to even look, but it has managed to get out every stain I've ever encountered, including most of a glass of red wine on a very light carpet.

  • 2:1 hydrogen peroxide and blue dawn. That has gotten every stain out. Even after it has been through the dryer. Yes cauterization is very very traumatic. I also had to have that done. I have no advise other than what the dr mentioned. Hope it gets better.

  • If it is white clothing, no joke, use Tilex, works like a dream. I would use hydrogen peroxide on other stuff, pour it on and rub stain, then wash shortly after. Works for us.

I forgot what brand, but they have for babies  this ointment you put in there nose, normally for colds, but you could use it for this situation and that should help keep it moist if you use daily. When I get home I can look at the brand

  • Ha about FBI.  I don't think that's enough--if you said, clean up murder or something, then maybe.  I suggest google.  To stop the bleeding in the first place, full blast cool mist humidifier by Crane has done wonders for me.  Maybe 2 if you have a large space.
  • Thanks for the tips! It looks like I may need to venture further abroad of my unscented/eco-friendly laundry supplies to get these stains out. Then again, I am having fun shopping for girly (as opposed to neutral) crib sheets in the event that she springs another leak at naptime. Even if I get this stuff IMMEDIATELY into cold water with stain remover, it's proving challenging to get out of.

@Brachysira, we have the Crane cool mist humidifier and find that if we run it on full blast, it leaves things damp in the immediate vicinity. It's been a balancing act to get the output just right but our Nest tells us the humidity in her room, which is around 40%, +/- a few.

  • Ah, I should have mentioned the cool mist doesn't all become part of your atmosphere, esp if things are wet enough already.  I just decided to put some towels down when I need it to be super moist in the room, like I have a sinus headache.
  • Ok the gel is called Ayr nasal gel
