WWYD re: frozen milk and vacation?

We're leaving for Gatlinburg on Friday and will be there for over a week.  I have a pretty decent freezer supply that I've started.  I'm worried that while we're on vacation my supply will dip for whatever reason.  I'm going to try to keep up with my pumping schedule, but if I miss a pump or can't pump enough while I'm there, I will need to either supplement or dig into my freezer stash.  Would it be better to just go up there, hope for the best, and buy formula if my supply is low that way I won't ruin any of my freezer stash or would it be better to bring some of the frozen milk and use it if I need it while I'm there?

I just don't want to take any of the frozen milk and wind up not having to use it b/c my supply is fine the whole time.

WWYD?

  • I wouldn't risk my freezer stash! I'm protective of my breast milk! When we went oot, I took formula for back up & only used 1 bottle so Dh's grandma could feed & spend time with DD so I could sleep in. I thought we'd use a lot more but we didn't & I was proud.

  • If you are anything like me on vacation to visit family last week you will eat a ton!  I don't EP but I wanted to continue to pump on vacation to keep my supply up and add to my stash because I go back to work next week.  I pumped SOOO much more than I ever do and I think it must be from how I was eating there.  I pumped morning and night and got double what I ever get at home.  So just eat a lot, and lots of junk food!
  • I would supplement rather than take frozen milk. I bought a box of the premeasured powder packets to take with us. That way a) its easy to use if I need it and b) I won't have a can of powder open that I have to use up by a certain date when I know I won't otherwise need it.
  • Do you have access to a freezer up there? The freezer milk has to be used within 24 hours of thawing, so if you don't have a freezer, there is no point in taking it. If you do, however, I'd be on the side of taking some.

First of all, what's the stash for, if not to prevent formula? Second, it makes good sense at some point (and you are close to that point) to start slowly turning over your freezer supply. In other words, use a little from the freezer and freeze a little new stuff. The last thing you want to have happen is for your supply to remain awesome and for your freezer stash to expire.
