Revisiting potential ASD dx

edited February 2014 in Special Needs
We had a f/u with DD1'S pediatrician today. She has been seeing her every 6 weeks or so since we switched to her this past spring. Right around her 2Nd birthday we saw a developmental ped and they did an Mchat (which she passed),  she was also seen by EI at that point.  They concluded she was cognitively advanced (completed 5 year old standards on the Batelle), has anxiety issues, and put her in OT for SPD. We also enrolled her in a typical preschool at that point with hopes her social development would take root.

Lately,  things have begun to unravel at school, behavioral issues are plentiful, speech patterns are odd,  and overall DH and I just feel like something isn't making sense. Her pediatrician today, set up a meeting with our special needs coordinator to pursue the STAT test, a full psychological evaluation,  and is re referring her to OT for SPD and help with ADLs.

I have a gut feeling she is hugh functioning ASD possibly with some co morbids (she has the standing referral for behavioral therapy due to concerns over OCD,anxiety, and OT believes ADD). I feel like things are becoming more apparent to those around her now that shes in school and cant blend in so easily.

Any words of wisdom from those where an ASD dx had to work its way out from other things that could be chalked up to quirks only?

  • Sometimes other things are masking the ASD so a diagnosis is a bit difficult.  We first had DS evaluated at age 5.  The diagnosis came back ADHD (we already had that 6 months prior), ODD, and anxiety.  Some of the quirks I felt were ASD were explained back to the ADHD and lack of focus.  They did say to have him re-evaluated in a few years.  Fast forward two years and we have the ASD diagnosis.  They said his ADHD was so severe at the time that it masked some of the quirks.  With age and medication, we were able to get a much more clear picture.
