Vent cleaning NBR

So we just installed our new furnace so I don't need to worry about bringing the baby home and having it die since the old one was 35yrs old. That got me thinking though that our vents probably could use a good clean get the best air quality for us and our kids. I am trying to call and find out what the price I'm looking at but it is so varied. One place charges $39.99 while others cost $400. None of the companies can tell me why they are more cheaper/expensive than the other so I was wondering if any of you ladies had had your ducts clean and how bad was the bill.

Re: Vent cleaning NBR

  • We had our vents cleaned for around $50 (we got a special coupon). The guy came and vacuumed out the vents which apparently haven't been cleaned ever (not surprising - the previous owner didn't do jack here).

He told us that the vents actually have build-up (dust mite and other bacteria poop is part of the build-up) that a vacuuming just will not remove. He recommended a chemical treatment where they spray inside and really clean them out. Whatever they spray breaks down the build-up and I believe there is an organic option. That's the treatment that will cost a few hundred dollars.

We didn't do it then, but thanks for posting this because I'd like to have it done before DD gets here.

  • Check Angie's List Big Deal, Amazon Local, Living Social, or Groupon. They have specials all the time.

Price is going to largely depend on how many mains and returns you have (most cover unlimited vents). The lower prices probably only cover 1 main and 1 return. Make sure you know your system before you have them come out, or they may end up up selling you. I got a $60 living social deal only to find that it covered 1 return and I have 3. Ended up costing an extra $200.

Also, make sure they're aware of the distance between where they can park their car and where your furnace is. The second company we called to clean didn't actually own a truck with a long enough hose to clean our system.

Good luck! It's definitely worth it though; our allergy symptoms have all but disappeared.

  • Price also depends on how they clean them. We went with the more expensive. The ones that send coupons and are really cheap just bring a hand held vacuum and from what I researched, it's not the effective. We had people come who had a giant vacuum truck. They had to run giant tubes through our house out to their van. They then showed us with a camera that our vents were completely clean. Good luck!

  • Definitely check how your duct work runs also.  We were going to have ours cleaned a few years ago when we had our furnace replaced, but were told since most of our ductwork ran vertical, we only really had to have the horizontal ones thoroughly cleaned.  Perhaps that figures into a price difference also.

  • The cheaper companies use the price as a tactic to get in your house and find other things that need to be cleaned or fixed. Get a second opinion on anything they say needs additional cleaning that they're going to charge for.
