Parenting type advice

DS has seemed off the last few days. He will wake a few times at night, crying and wimpering and unable to say what's wrong. He's sleeping longer and seems cranky. He's not eating a ton. Monday he had a cough and raspy voice, but that's gone. Three times yesterday his cheeks went brilliantly red, like stop sign red, and gradually faded.

He has yet to have a fever.

This morning he's curled up in my arms. He said everything hurts and is reluctant to wake. It took me thirty minutes to wake him yesterday after I left him sleep in. I asked what hurts the most and he said inside his mouth. I don't see any obvious sore teeth or spots (my first thought was HFM, but no rash anywhere). His cheeks look normal today.

He has no fever. At all.

Yesterday once I woke him he was super happy and wanted to go to daycare.

Assuming he does the same today, do I send him? I want to save my PTO for mat leave but I REALLY don't want to send him if he's sick and sad and likely to infect others.

I feel so bad for him. And frustrated. He's been acting like he's about to get sick for four days and nothing. Last week dh had the flu but so far DS and I have been fine, other than this strangeness.

No temp, no rash, happy mood = I'd send him in and call your pedi nurse line to see what they think of the symptoms & if they think it's worth an office check.

He fell asleep again. Aaaah! I hate waking him when he might be getting sick. I'll start working on him and see how he feels after eating.

Calling the pedi is a good idea. I can't believe I didn't think of that.

Those are actually enough symptoms that my daycare would send him home, even without a fever--I'd definitely call my ped and at least run through the symptoms with her nurse.

Really? A happy kid with occasional red cheeks who is tired? Those are stricter than most places we've been.

  • He just fell asleep at the kitchen table in the time it took me to pour a bowl of cereal for him, then woke and ran to throw up phlegm into the toilet. Decision made.

Poor kid is currently sleeping on a mattress on the bathroom floor, all nestled in blankets.

This is kinda how DS acts when he's getting teeth, could it be that?

Eta: his cheeks always get red too with teeth

  • I hope he feels better. Since your dh just had the flu I would take him in to rule that out.

I would take mine to pedi
    We're going at 2pm.

I wouldn't normally for being sleepy and throwing up once, but all the symptoms together worry me, plus the chance I'll go into labor any day now. I don't want to do a 24 hour wait-it-out thing right now.

  • Poor guy! I hope you get some answers. Sadly DD and DS both acted all lethargic like that the day before they were diagnosed with Influenza A but they had high temps too.

Maybe its just a tummy bug. Hope he feels better asap!
  • Hope he feels better soon and it doesn't spread to others in your fam.

  • The pedi thinks it's just some sort of virus. DS slept most of the morning and afternoon and has an okay appetite. No symptoms otherwise. I'm hoping he's better tomorrow.
