Indoor Activities

When I was on maternity leave, LO and I used to get out of the house a lot and go to the park, zoo, aquarium, gardens, and similar places.  With how cold it has been around here lately, though, I find we stay in more often after work and on the weekends than before.  We do all the typical stuff one might do at this age, like playing with toys, singing songs, reading books, etc., but I was wondering if any of you have some more unique indoor activities you like to do.

So far, we have added music time.  I purchased the Hohner band set some of the ladies recommended on here, and we have a piano, xylophone, and makeshift drum (Tupperware) as well.  We stream some music on the Apple TV and play along.  I was also thinking of making a fabric box with a bunch of different textured fabrics to play with.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

Re: Indoor Activities

  • How about art time?  Get nontoxic paints and either go freeform if you're cool with the mess, or as some have done here, put the paper in a plastic bag with dollops of paint for LO to smear.  E "painted" a frame at daycare last week and they put a photo of him in it and hung it on the wall at crawling height -- super adorable!

They do this at our daycare, but I have been afraid to try it home. Maybe I should just give it a shot!

  • Following. We are staying inside a lot now and with her going longer between naps I'm finding it hard to keep her entertained.

  • This is out of the house, but maybe story time at your local library? We also have a huge garden the next town over - 1000 acres+. They have an indoor greenhouse that you could spend all day in. Maybe something like that?

The local library near me mostly does that stuff during the week, so that will probably have to wait until summer.  We also have a huge garden nearby (about 20 min. away.)  I used to take LO there weekly, but now it's more like monthly.  They also have the greenhouse, but it's like a ten minute walk back to it.  While we could do that walk in twenty degree or below weather (bundle up!), I often would rather just stay in my warm house.
  • I also just stopped a couple hours ago at Buy Buy Baby to check out some things we could do and bought a puppet. LO loves this thing so far soooo much. So maybe we get a few more and do puppet play sometimes.

Found this blog that might give you inspiration. I just set up the muffin tin with some of LO's toys and other random kitchen objects based on her idea here, and I also emailed my mom to see if she has fabric to make the fabric box. https://theimaginationtree.com/2012/06/baby-play-ideas-and-activities-6-18.html
I actually went to JoAnn's last night and bought fabric for the fabric box because it was something I had previously read about.  They have "fat quarters" for $1.50, so I got a bunch of different textures--corduroy, fleece, smooth, etc.  I think I have to have my mom hem them, though, because there are a lot of loose threads on the edges.

Truthfully, I'd much rather DD take interest in these types of activities rather than everything by Fisher Price, Leapfrog, and the like!
Me too! I don't mind him playing with his regular toys sometimes, but I want him to do more interactive stuff too.
  • And now I want to go to ikea.

I laffed.  We haven't put the pack n play back in our bedroom from our trip this weekend and I quoted this to DH as I danced in the empty space where it normally is.  Love this movie lol

  • I did the same thing after I moved the pack n play out of my room @elmoali. Everytime I see the word "activities" I think of that scene!

If you do let me know if they have those here :) ikea is quite the drive for me lol

They have those baskets and play fruits/veggies at Canadian Ikea they are just a bit more money.  I would check your local store availability first.

WSS. Usually you can check the store's stock on the Canadian ikea website.
