Recommend your breast pump

My "plan" is to bf and pump so I was wondering which pump is best for this as well as bottles/accessories for babies to switch from breast to pump and back easily. I'm currently looking at Medela products such as the calma and maybe the freestyle pump? Thanks!

Re: Recommend your breast pump

  • Check to see if your insurance covers certain models under ACA. My insurance reimbursed whatever pump I wanted, so I went with the double medela pump in style advanced. It was reviewed well in Baby Bargains, and our NICU nurses recommended Medela.
It has worked well for me - no complaints. Well, aside from pumping being a PITA as compared to breast feeding, but that's not the pump's fault. :)

  • I agree! Always check what insurance will cover. I got my medela pump in style for free with almost 300$ worth of replacement parts and accessories. Not including the nipple shields, SNS system and harmony hand held pump they also gave me. Plus they covered the most amazing pump on earth, the symphony, for 6 months if I wanted it. If my babies were unable to latch they covered the cost of the calma bottles too. The send me freezer bags and nipple cream when I request it. But yes medela is by far my favorite brand. A double electric is the way to go in my opinion. All I needed to do was get the script from the doc and take it to a medical supply place.

  • But honestly the playtex drop ins are my all time fav. Used them with all 3 kids without any issue.

  • Thanks! Insurance does cover the in style starter kit but I would have to pay 105 more for the freestyle im wondering if the 105 is worth it as well

  • It looks like the starter kit and the in style advanced are the same except the starter kit has less accessories? If that's the case, I'd just go with the starter kit and not spend the extra money on the freestyle.

One other consideration would be that if your babies are in the NICU, my NICU had pumps in the room and it was nice to have the same brand so all the parts were interchangeable.

I love love love anything medela. I used an ameda last week when DD2 was in hospital, and it barely expressed any milk- but I was still full. The medela symphony is amazing. I have the swing- but wish I'd got a double pump for sure.
The only good thing about my daughter being in the NICU was being able to use the Ameda pumps in the pump room. I responded so well to it. My insurance covered a Hygeia EnJoye, which I like as much as one can like such a contraption. I pump about 33 oz a day and it has been going strong for 4 months. We use the Medela calma bottle. I think it helps to slow down feeds.

  • I rented a symphony for a month to establish my supply and then purchased a freestyle. It's been working well for me so far, and I'm currently pumping full time.

  • My insurance covered, and I used, a Medela Freestyle with my DS for 12 months. I especially recommend it for those who work FT too. It is very portable, has a long battery life, and is super small, you can clip it to your pumping bra and go hands free.

The only thing is, and I never looked into this, but I hear it is a closed system. I think that means milk can get into the pump, or something along the lines of that. I never had an issue, but I hear a lot about closed versus open systems.

  • I'm currently renting a symphony and I love it!!! It's a hospital grade pump. I also have a swing but it doesn't work as well as the symphony.
