Natural Birth

Not Natural-Birth related but "Natural-Pregnancy" related, I guess!

Hi all,

I'm trying to avoid taking any Tylenol, or really any other medication during pregnancy regardless of whether or not I've been told it's safe - just a personal preference. So far I've been fine, but now at 15 weeks, starting to experience some headaches and back pain, plus this weekend I caught a cold! Oh what fun.

What are your med-free recommendations for dealing with:
-a pretty constant, low-level headache
-lower back pain
-the common cold (feels more like head cold than chest cold. Lots of nasal congestion and sinus pressure, but not too much coughing.)

Thanks in advance!

  • I would do some salt water/saline nose spray. For the back pain the only thing I could recommend is hot/cold compresses off and on. Also possibly see a chiropractor. Your back pain could be inadvertently leading to headaches!

  • My SIL swears by saline nasal rinses as pp mentioned.  When I had headaches in the 2nd tri, I would drink a small cup of caffeinated iced coffee and it worked every time.  I know it's still a drug, but seems more natural than Tylenol.
  • I use my grandma's solution to congestion- steam. She would boil water with a scoop of Vicks vapor rub (I would replace with essential oils), turn off heat, and stboils er with a towel overhead to breathe in the steam. I prefer a steamy shower in a tiny bathroom.

  • Make sure to hydrate. I had a headache during my first trimester that lasted 24 hours! I was taking Tylenol but it was useless anyway. Turned out I wasn't drinking enough water. Now I have a nalgene bottle with me constantly. I've also found that it actually helps my back to exercise regularly whether it is cardio or pilates. And maybe your SO or a friend can give you a nice back rub!
  • For headcolds and congestion I like to rub Mentholatum on my chest/face/etc. A neti pot is also AWESOME for clearing out clogged sinuses.

For aches and pains, low temperature baths help me. I also heat up a rice bag and put it on the sore area.

I also recommend pelvic rocks for sore backs. Get on your hands and knees and 'tilt' your pelvis back and forth -- it kinda feels like you're sticking your butt up in the air. It helps stretch the area that's sore, which is probably where your uterus is connected...a common sore spot in pregnant women.

    Good luck!
