Hula Hooping???

Has anyone tried hula hooping during their pregnancy?

This is my first and I am unsure of what exercises are safe during the first trimester.  I used to hula hoop a few months ago, but I stopped just before Thanksgiving (when I prob needed it most).  I would like to start back, but I've only seen mommies hooping when they're further along.  Does anyone know if it is safe to hula hoop during the first trimester?

Re: Hula Hooping???

  • I would imagine hula hooping is one of those things that you can do until your body lets you know it's time to stop. I don't think there's any way you could hurt your baby hula hooping in these super early weeks bc your uterus is still so low and in your pelvis. It may give you round ligament pain though. I would try it if it's something you enjoy!

Please, please, please do not touch a hula hoop until MUCH farther along and you have been cleared by a medical professional.

ETA: Please note the sarcasm.  This just has to be one of the craziest questions I've seen on these boards.

  • I don't think it should be a problem, my cnm told me that I could run a jackhammer at 6 weeks and still have a healthy pregnancy. This was after dh asked why pregnant women can't go on roller coasters, and she said liability
  • That ones tough. I'd call the OB for advice on that one.

Seems like if your body is used to it or similar activity, it may be ok this early but maybe not later. I don't have an MD at the end of my name at all. So...my assumptions and opinions have no ground here.
  • Thanks for the helpful insight.  I will indeed check the weight of my hoop though!  :)
  • Wait...this is a thing?  I though hula hoops were for kids on the playground...there are CLASSES?!?!!?

I live in the boonies, we just started getting Zumba (and it is likely in some crazy person's basement, not an acutaly studo...)

My thoughts exactly. I have to drive 2 towns over to find any kind of fitness class. I had no idea hula hooping was a thing.

  • Thanks for that laugh this morning!

    :))

Yea, definitely did not realize this was a thing. Now, after further review, am recanting my initial snark and replacing it with this gif:

ETA:  Why does my gif go away when I post?  I can see it right now as I edit... hmm...
