Phone Etiquette (or lack thereof)

Some people just don't get it.

MIL called last night at 9:51.  Obviously P was sleeping. We were in bed talking, not quite asleep, but almost.  She was calling to "check in" and see how we were doing.  WTH.  If you're calling that late (especially on a weekday), it had better be an emergency.

I also have a friend who calls, but never leaves a message if I don't pick up.  And she's one of those people that you can never get off the phone.  She called yesterday while I was unloading groceries and I missed it.  No message.  No text.  What's so hard about leaving a message?  I really don't feel like setting aside an hour to call her back.

  • My uncle called at 8:30 last night to wish me a happy birthday. Yes, I was very happy that he thought of me, but I have to admit that I cringed as soon as I heard the phone ring.

Call me at 6 AM-- we are awake.
    9 PM -- no way.
  • My phone is constantly on vibrate because rings make me jumpy haha anyhow, I'm 25, having young friends means a lot of texts and calls well after 9 pm

  • So annoying when the phone rings late, or at nap time or really anytime, lol.

  • We don't have a home phone and I leave my cell downstairs at night. The downfall is that if there is ever an emergency, I'm hard to reach, but otherwise I get to avoid stuff like this :o)
Honestly that's the only reason I keep my phone on (DH too).  His parents are in their 70s and live on the side of a mountain.  My dad has heart issues and my mom is home alone at night b/c dad works 3rd shift.  If something happened and we missed a call, I'd be really upset.
  • Yuck.

  • I love the Do Not Disturb setting.  I put it on as soon as I get in bed.

I also hate voicemail.  Send me a text.  @maryannespier I would also classify mine as an anxiety.  They go months without me listening to them.

  • Of every time I missed a call someone left a voice mail I'd get Pissed. I see who called. I can call them back when I have time.
    I freaking hate voice mail.

I have a very strange anxiety about voicemail and almost never listen to them.
Haha! Me too! I have like 50 voicemails on my iPhone that still have the blue dot next to them. If it's someone I haven't heard from in a while, or a number I don't recognize, I'll listen.

  • No home phone. Silenced cell ringer. No noise.

  • How annoying.

My mom called during the dinner hour on Valentine's Day and was disappointed that we couldn't skype right then and there.  And here's a gem - I love my in-laws, I really do but I had a serious issue with my sister-in-law a couple of years ago regarding in the middle of the night texts.  I keep my phone on so that I could use it as an alarm and because we don't have a landline.  Please follow along with the timeline:

10:30 p.m. - SIL sends the family a text to tell us all that they were taking their 3 year old to the ER b/c he was in pain.  OMG.  Hope he is ok.  Thanks for letting us know.

12 a.m. - Sends a family text to tell us all that they are still waiting to see the doctor.  Ok.  Thanks.

1:30 a.m. - Sends a family text to tell us all that they were finally admitted to a room, still waiting for a doctor.  Ok.

2:00 a.m. - Sends a family text to tell us all that son was just backed up and needed an enema.  At this point, I am shaking at DH, yelling at him, asking what the hell is wrong with his sister that she is texting us about poop.

4:30 a.m. - Sends a family text to tell us all that they are now home.  I wanted to kill.  DH.  His sister.  Whomever.

5:15 a.m. - My alarm goes off and I am in a foul mood.  DH is clueless.  Slept through the whole thing.  When I get home after work that day, he says to me, "So, um, my sister.  She sent us a lot of text messages last night, didn't she?"

ETA: Some people just don't get phone etiquette.

I also have VM anxiety and I almost never listen. I'm all about Do Not Disturb. We don't have a home phone and I set DND at night. Wonderful!
I loved this because I have the same anxiety.  LOL.  Actually, I have a phone phobia.  If I can't text or email you, you probably won't hear from me.

  • I'm al about the do not disturb feature, too. I have my mom and DH set as favorites and they have to call twice for it to override and ring. I usually have it on silent anyway, but DH has been sick, so I'm paranoid lately.

The Do Not Disturb feature on the iPhone is great for this. You can allow calls from certain callers to come through (or repeated calls). It silences random texts and phone calls, but if there's an emergency, important calls still get through.

I thought this thread was going to be about chewing or slurping (or USING THE BATHROOM) while on the phone. Ugh. I hate all of those things. I may or may not get "dropped service" if those things are happening. X(
Oooooh that feature sounds heavenly!  I really do need to upgrade to a smartphone.
  • My mil called at 3 am once last spring. She wanted to warn us about a medium sized earthquake that happened hundreds of kilometres away from us. She worries that our island will sink into the ocean. Dh ripped her a new one and said that only medical emergencies or death warrant calls at that time and also look at a map before calling.
  • I love the iPhone's DND feature. Not that the rest of my family follows it, but when I was growing up, I was taught that if you call someone after 9pm, it better be one hell of an emergency.
  • Rude!

I also hate voicemail, I never listen to them.  I haven't used the DND feature on my phone.  I think I will start!
