Utensils

Last food related question ;)

When did you start trying out utensils? And how long did it take your child to learn how to use a fork and spoon?

I've started with my son but it seems like they mostly get thrown on the floor.

Re: Utensils

  • DS likes to use the spoon once I load it up for him. The hardest part is getting him to either let go or turn his hand to load the spoon again. The fork is hit and miss. He doesn't really get the idea of sticking the food yet. It's more he just wants to have one b/c everyone else does. It normally ends up on the floor.

  • We started giving him a fork (breakfast only, to pierce fruits) when DS was 11 months.  He can pierce the fruits and feed himself, but he MUCH prefers using his hands as they are much more efficient than the fork!

We haven't really used a spoon yet b/c DS doesn't like yogurt (and we don't do applesauce).  HOwever, I let him play with spoons when we play with dried beans, and I notice he's getting better at transferring beans from one container to the next without dropping them all over.

  • My DD started to like holding g a spoon around 10 months, and actually spooning her yogurt/applesauce around 1 year. She has been holding a fork (and so engines using it successfully) since about 18 months.

  • Last night was actually the first time DD successfully spoonfed herself. She is 15 months. And when I say successful it's a loose term because more pudding ended up on her tray than her mouth and after five or so scoops she flipped the spoon over and started using the wrong end. We introduced utensils at 12 months but they're pretty much just thrown on the floor. I'm hoping we're getting there now though.

  • I haven't started with DD yet, who is 13.5 months.

Although I don't remember when I started with DS, I do remember he had the fork mastered really well at 15 months...so I probably started him awhile before that. Guess I should start DD!   I didn't give him spoons much until a long time after that because, as bad as it sounds, I just didn't want the mess. He was probably closer to 2 for spoons.

  • I think he really started using them around 15 or 16 months.  He doesn't like a lot of foods that require a spoon, but he is great with a fork.  He looks so grown up using a fork!

  • I was about to post this question as well.  All the responses were very helpful.  My little one just gets mad and throws the utensils on the floor.

  • We worked with the fork last night and instead of throwing it on the ground he was actually trying to stab his food. So some progress made ;)

  • I started giving DD a fork and/or spoon with every meal when she was around 10 months. Then, it was mostly to get myself in the habit of doing it, but she would often pick them up and bang them around on her tray/bowl/plate/head for a while before throwing them on the floor.

She didn't start showing interest in using them to eat with until probably about a month ago (she's 14 months now). A couple times I've watched her use them as correctly as she's capable of right now: will hold it in her left hand, scrape the fork or spoon across the bottom of her plate or bowl, maybe pick up some food, then bring the utensil up to her mouth (but normally dumps any food on the utensil into her bib on the way up). Some days she'll just pick up the food with her right hand, place it on the spoon or fork in her left hand, then try to eat off it that way. But if she's really hungry, she doesn't even bother trying and just holds the utensil in her right hand while eating with her left.
