Adoption

Intro.

Hi!  I'm not sure where to begin, because I'm kind of shocked to find myself on this board! :)

My husband and I have 3 children, ranging from 7-12, and over the past few years have seriously discussed the possibility of a tubal reversal, though I had some extremely complicated pregnancies and deliveries, so we weren't sure it was the best option, which is why we'd taken that precaution in the first place.
We have also talked through the years about the possibility of adoption, but after having been through the experience with quite a few friends, or heard firsthand of others experiences, decided that only infant adoption would be right for our family at this particular time.
Very long story short, I was referred just a week or so ago to a mother who expressed wanting to have an open adoption.  She is due in about 5 months, she contacted me, and we absolutely hit it off from the first time we met!
I have been (literally) dreaming of babies, giving birth, having another child, and even having someone give me an infant for months now.  I now believe that possibly I was being prepared for this!
She wants to meet the rest of the family now, and due to the emotions that will obviously be involved (though I'm doing my utmost to keep them in check), we're proceeding cautiously, even though we are hopeful and excited! :) This has all been a very sudden answer to prayer, and I've had some awesome straight-forward conversations with the birth mom so far already about not wanting my heart, or my children's hearts broken in the process, and both of us expressing our desires and concerns.  I've also let her know that she had our full support and encouragement no matter what - we just want honesty, and, if she does wholeheartedly allow us to, we want to absolutely love and adore her precious baby!

Does anyone have open adoption advice, happy experiences, or cautions?!

Re: Intro.

  • Most domestic infant adoptions these days have some level of openness, though it can vary widely. We have a semi-open adoption with DD's birth family, and it has worked out well so far. Feel free to post particular questions you have, and we'd be happy to answer them.
