Planning a kitchen reno

Has anyone renovated their kitchen recently? We are planning to do it within the next year. We currently have a standard L-shaped, bilevel kitchen. I need recommendations for websites to help me plan the layout/design. I want to add an island and possibly relocate the sink and dishwasher to the island. I figure that I spend so much time at the sink, that it might as well face the rest of the house instead of out a tiny window.

  • @chickenonsunday Do you like this set up? It would be an island with an elevated bar area. Does my reasoning make sense?

  • We did a reno in late 2011 but didn't really change he footprint of the kitchen.

  • We are planning a Reno for the fall and adding an island. DH wants it raised but I want it level with everything else because the kids are too young to be climbing on high bar sstools.

Do you guys find your young kids are able to sit safely at the island (assuming they are out of high chairs)?

  • I am liking the idea of an elevated bar to hide the mess of the sink.

I'm not worried about the kids on bar stools...they are only getting older. You could just not have stools there initially.

We are doing a kitchen reno in the next few months - knocking down a wall and putting in an bi-level island.  I've been loving the Houzz.com website - you can search by basically anything (ie, corner cabinets, center island w/sink, etc)  tons of great ideas!  And then you can ask questions and the builders, designers, contractors respond (sometimes!).

We decided to put our cooktop & oven in the center island because our sink currently looks out a window.  I wasn't sure what to put under that window - would it look weird with just a plain countertop?  I do most of the cooking, so I am mainly at the stove/oven - or chopping next to the cooktop.  So I wanted to look out into the living room while I was cooking.  DH does most of the dishes.  :)

We just re-did ours, but knew we were selling the house and didn't want to do too much.  We used Ikea cabinets and did the work and planning ourselves.  It turned out pretty well.  If it was our "forever" home I would have hired it out.

I prefer the look of a flat island with counter height stools.  Moving the sink over there is a good idea, but layout changes like that start to add up with needing plumbing moved.
My parents used to flip houses and they avoided changing plumbing as much as possible, because of the cost.

  • Not redoing but we're building right now so I talked to a couple kitchen designers for our plans. Ended up with a large one level island that will house the sink and dishwasher, has seating for 3 or 4 stools, and looks onto the great room.
Fwiw I was told by both designers that raised bars are no longer a thing to do as people seem to be looking for more openness. Not sure if you care.

  • In the middle of a kitchen reno but we aren't switching the layout so I'm not sure I can help. I will say if you can hire people and do as little as possible yourself, than hire. We started ours the day after thanksgiving. It's mid February.

We did knock out a wall to create an open floor plan, though. Yes. I quoted myself.
  • This is our layout minus islandimage
  • This is the exact layout we have now. I want some type of island or peninsula. Whatever we decide, there needs to be a TON more storage and organization!

  • My parents did, and they used Home Depot/Ikea for their ideas, and layout
