apple (I peeled it, and took a bite then let her suck on it)
We also offered avocado. She gripped it really well, but I also made sure it wasn't too ripe. I was prepared to roll it in cheerios or something to make it easier, but she did fine with it sliced.
We tried mango, but her hands looked red after. I don't know if it is from dry winter skin or due to the mango- so we won't do that again for awhile.
Last night she tried cantaloupe and chicken. We made stirfry for us, so before I put the sauce on it I just pulled out some chicken and veggies for her to eat.
For breakfast yesterday I made egg/banana pancakes. I mashed up a banana and mixed with two eggs and cooked like pancakes. Came out good- kind of tasted like banana bread. She liked it but it was super messy.
I keep forgetting to offer a sippy cup of water with meals, but last night we remembered. She had more fun playing with the cup than anything else..;)
Can I join in? LO has been hating me feeding her the puréed foods. I'm thinking we switch to BLW because she loves eating what SO and I are eating and she's always wanting to feed herself.
So I do have a question. I've heard that babys don't normally choke but when LO is feeding herself she coughs a lot while chewing and it freaks me out, because I think she is choking. Has anyone else experienced that? And also do you cut up their foods to bite size or big enough so they can grip it?
Sorry for all the questions. This is new to me. :-/

What your describing is gagging...which is normal and apart of learning how to eat. Babies have a shallow gag reflex. Choking means no sound coming out, air not being able to move. It is amazing watching LO...last night she got a chunk of carrot in her mouth and was able to move it forward and spit it out (all while I held my breath.)
You can also youtube babyledweaning to see videos of kids doing it. Please research and even read the BLW book before you try. It has been so fun, and I'm 100% happy this is the way we are going.
This week we've done pear, zucchini, and yogurt. He likes the pear, the zucchini stick was fun for him to hold and bang around, the yogurt he made a big face. We didn't do so much this week because at the beginning of the week he was still getting over being sick. Today he is going to try some of our Valentine's dinner...so steak.

What kind of yogurt did you do? Did you preload a spoon?
We just started this last weekend. So far this week she has had asparagus, carrot and orange all of which she loved. She also managed to steal lettuce, couscous and rice from my plates this week at dinner. She was a little iffy on the lettuce and didn't get any of the couscous or rice to her mouth but sure had fun smearing it all over the table.
We just started today and we did green beans. It was probably the most hilarious thing ever. He had no problem picking it up and putting it in his mouth. However once he tasted them he started gagging. He did not like it one bit. He started gagging as soon as he touched them again. We will try them again but we may be doing a different vegetable if he acts like he hates it. He kept trying to eat it, bless his little heart, but the taste was too much.
I'm going to lurk a little. LO is a young A13 baby. I tried puréed green beans but I think it was a little gritty and she kept on spitting it out. I may try avocado after reading some posts. I was trying puréed just because someone bought me a baby brezza but I think she would just like our food.
We just started Tuesday an have done steamed carrots, broccoli and avocado. He LOVED the broccoli, took two tries but think he likes the carrots as well. He got the avocado to his mouth but I couldn't really gauge a reaction and once he dropped it he didn't pick it up again.
For those who have done meats how have you prepared and offered it?
@emeraldeyed315 I am totally making the egg banana pancakes tomorrow! Did you keep the whites in them?
You mentioned about rolling in Cheerios.. Do you think baby oatmeal cereal would work too? Not sure it's recommended .. Off to google! And.. Follow up question.. You think that would help with the slippery-ness of bananas?
@Emeraldeyed315 I used full fat Greek yogurt and I did load the spoon then set it on the high chair tray for him. It does eventually end up in his mouth but usually not before he smears it all over.
We just started solids for the first time tonight and gave LO avocado (it was taco night). I wasn't expecting him to actually eat any the first time but he did surprisingly well! The slices were a little slippery and he ended up just smooshing most of it in his little fists and then shoving those in his mouth. I'm really excited to try more with him!
@ashesha13 I offered chicken the other night, and I just gave the chicken I ate, it was a corn meal/ bread crumb breading so nothing salty or nothing spicy

I did use the whole egg, but we have no egg allergies in my family. She had no issues at all. I do think oatmeal would work too- anything that can coat that is good for baby would work! Some people even leave some skin on and let the baby suck it off.
For bananas, I cut most of the peel off but leave some sticking out. My husband says I castrate them...;) Then she eats it like a frozen pop and squeezes the banana fruit out of the peel.

It helped us to cut the meat, so when she grabs it the grain of the meat pulls apart so she can actually eat some.

We had chicken legs a couple of times last week just because I wanted to try meat with her and I thought that would be an easy delivery mechanism. I pulled off the skin, most of the meat and anything that looked like it could end up presenting a choking hazard -- basically just left a small amount of meat on the bone -- and let her go to town. CUTEST. THING. EVER. She loved gnawing on the bone. The second time, I left on more of the meat, and she just gummed away at it the whole time we were eating dinner. The only troubling part was that we ate close to her bedtime and she started rubbing her eyes with the drumstick, so I had a lot of chicken grease to wash off her face. It's been our biggest BLW success to date.
This week DD2 had banana, avocado, cucumber, orange pepper, egg yolk and a hunk of chicken thigh.
So far she prefers harder foods that she can easily suck on. She doesn't really like the stuff that breaks apart and ends up in her mouth (particularly the avocado and egg yolk). I just don't think she's ready for the different textures yet. She just gags anything up that actually breaks off and makes it into her mouth.
@mitsb707 I didn't think lo got much of anything if at all first day we tried carrots but two days later I found a small piece as well as little orange specs in his poo. After we tried broccoli the next day there were the little florets in his poop. So you'll know soon enough if he got anything
have you tried cold foods? LOs gums hurt and she loves gumming cold cucumber slices and yogurt
Yes. He likes them for a while. I think it was a mix of teething and lack of nap that made dinner not last too long. We did broccoli again the next night and he loves it.
Has anyone tried asparagus? If so, any tips on cooking it? I've always sucked at cooking it right...
I plan on trying some soon since we love asparagus.
They have the frozen ones where they come in a steam bag, or with fresh I would chop half way up the shaft since they tend to be woody toward the bottom , then just boil until they become tender. They boil up pretty quick.
LO is loving to gum on celery. I actually read on the BLW website that it possibly has a slightly natural numbing effect. Heard from a nurse but couldn't find any other source. Anyway LO prefers it to cucumber. I just watch for any stringy parts that get loose
We've been doing honemade purees for the past month and I'm just starting BLW since she suddenly only wants to feed herself! I'm so nervous about it! I've read a lot on it and watched some you tube videos...but still have this fear of her choking! We did banana spears this morning and I felt like she got way too much in her mouth and did gag which I know is normal. I think she started to choke at one point...had a gagging face, eyes watery, and didn't make a sounds for a few seconds. But then was fine. Has anyone had any choking incidents??? Dealt with baby getting way too much in their mouth??
Thanks for this check in, ladies. After a lot of discussing DH and I are going to try out BLW with DD. I ordered the BLW cookbook and it will be here next week. We are not starting foods until at least sometime next month but it's nice to read what you ladies have been trying.
I'm interested in knowing if anyone has had any choking incidents as well, since that's one of my biggest worries.
Also, anyone have any good YouTube videos/ channels to check out? I haven't spent a lot of time looking up videos yet , but just wondering if there are any good ones anyone found when they were looking.

Lo loved everything but the broccoli which I figured, but I will try it again in the future.

I will remember for future, lo just likes to put things in his mouth, he hadn't actually anything, but we offered in small hunks.
Breadsticks were a hit last night
@emeraldeyed315 thanks for the advice! We tried the pancakes this morning- a huge hit!!

Thanks! I'm hoping it goes well! Seems like a good food to hold :-)
