Favorite LO Books?

Looking to start a collection of books for our first babes. Would love to know your favorite authors or books to see what to add to our Library?

What is your favorite? Or what did you love as a little kiddo?

(Sorry if this was posted already, I searched but didn't find one)

Re: Favorite LO Books?

  • I also like the On the Night You Were Born book.  Very sweet.

We really like Eric Carle books... especially Brown Bear.

At this age, she really enjoys books that are just a picture with the word, to help build vocabulary.  She is obsessed with books.

Love You Forever is a classic. My mother read to me as a child and I read it to DD but only when DH is not there as I dissolve into a puddle of snotty tears.

    DD Loves:

    Dinosaur, Roar

    I Am a Bunny

    Good Night Moon

    Anything by Eric Carle

For her birthday we are getting her several new books about construction equipment because she LOVES construction equipment! So far Goodnight Goodnight Construction Site is on the list and I am trying to find a few more!

ETA: DOG, CAT & MOO by Mathew Van Fleet. These books are so beloved by DD that we wore out all three of our original copies and had to buy new ones. They are great books; I've never met a kid who didn't love them!

  • My sisters and I all loved the Little Critter books when we were 'little critters' ;)  Also-  I think we had like every Golden Book from before 1990...I might try and talk my parents out of them!

  • My kids loved flap books when they were super young but the MOST favorite books are the "Pat the Bunny" and "Pat the Cat" series.  We would read these to our kids as early as 6 months and they would sit and interact.  My current 14 month old makes me read it over and over again.  A great flap book would be "I wrote to the Zoo" and anything that teaches body parts.  Once my kids hit 2 years of age that's when I could have them settle long enough for Dr. Seuss, Thomas the Train and the Nancy Tillman books (which each child has a special one all to their own and love them!).  Also, I introduced the library at a very young age.  I think most people forget about it.  I do buy "special" books for my kids but they just love books so there's something special for us about the library.  Its a good way to see what your child is interested in before you invest in a ton of books.  And to be honest, when I get my 1 year old the board books- yes I do Clorox wipe them down (I'll admit to that embarrassingly enough).
  • I just love Guess How Much I Love You.  And anything by Sandra Boynton.  DD loves Berenstain Bears and anything in the Pinkalicious series.

  • I love the Golden Books, but they might be for later on when DD is older.  We do a lot of Baby Einstein books because they're simple and bright/colorful.  DD has loved those since she was tiny and now has most of them memorized.  I'm amazed at her vocaulary now!  She's also starting to like Dr. Seuss.

  • DH bought me, "I Love My Mommy Because..." when I had DS and I still tear up when I read it sometimes because it is so simply sweet.
My mom bought me, "On the Day You Were Born" and I rec getting the cd because the music is very soothing and unique and the author reads the book over the music in different tempos and songs.

  • I second Sarah Boynton and lift the flaps. Also the Baby Lit series is fun and If you give a mouse a cookie.

Summer Rae Garcia's book recommendations, liked quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
  • I just ordered a bunch from the classic's area on Amazon.

Guess How Much I Love You
    Dinosaur, Roar
    I Am a Bunny
    Good Night Moon
Cars And Trucks and Things That Go by Richard Scarry
Busy Busy Town by Richard Scarry

  • Right now DD's favorites include

    Are you a cow?
    Peg+Cat The Chicken Problem
    Madeline
    Sleep tight, Elmo
Brown bear, brown bear what do you see?
    Pass the sheet cake.

    BabyGaga
  • Where the Wild Things Are is our favorite. All of the Sandra Boynton board books are great.
Except the book "The Going to Bed Book." I couldn't get over how they get dressed in pajamas and then go have an exercise party. It makes no logical sense, so I returned that shiz. DS LOVES "Moo, Baa, La La La" though. He practically reads it along with me now at almost 23 months :)

We mostly read board books right now because I don't want DS ripping the paper pages of some of my favorite children's books :P

I particularly like this book (and there are a lot of ones like it) because it has great sensory pages for the LOs.

    In my nest
    The very busy spider
On the night you were born
Where's spot? (All the flaps are missing ;) )
    Jamberry
The packs of small baby Einstein books are awesome-great for shoving in a diaper bag
  • Llama llama books are huge hits with my little guy! Llama llama hoppity hop Llama llama zippity zoom Llama llama nighty night Llama llama wakey wake. All come in board books We also have other llama llama books in paperback. They teach lessons with pictures that little ones relate to.

DD loves Sandra Boynton books. Silly rhymes and such. Lately her favorite is Pajama Time. But we also like Moo Baa La La La and The Going to Bed book. Love the comment above about the excercise after PJs in that book. I think of it as playtime after pjs. For DD we do dinner, bath & pjs then roughly 30min of play before we lay her down so it fits for us ;)

My personal favorite is Time for Bed by Fox.

Also have this book with 100 First Animals. Love how it's just pictures with names. DD flips through and just points to each so we practice the names.

  • Wilbur by Leslie Helakoski is a great one. It's about a little lamb who loves to be himself even though it means being different.

  • My all time favorite is
    I Love You So...
It's sincerely the cutest book about how love doesn't change and how unmeasurable it is.
    My next favorite is
    Barnyard Dance
  • DS's favorites right now:
    Click Clack Moo
    Runaway Bunny
    Wheels on the Bus
  • All the books above, plus I like:
    I love you, Stinky Face
I love you through and through
    The very bad bunny
It's tough to be a bunny
    Chickens aren't the only ones
Curious George book of 5 minutes stories
    If I Built a House
    If i Built a Car

  • I have all my books from when I was a kid and I loved The Berenstain Bears, so I'v been buying more. I like books that actually tell a little story rather than just rhymes (the popularity of Goodnight Moon baffles me) and DS seems to like everything so far. Right now we're reading books based on the movie Cars that SIL gave us. They are really long so its only a page or two a night, but DS likes cars and will point to them and ask.

    I also like
A Cuddle for Little Duck (its about a duckling spending the day with his mommy)
    Ten Little Dinosaurs
A Bedtime Kiss for Chester Racoon

  • So glad to see I'm not the only one who can't get through Love You Forever without bawling...
My personal favorite as a kid was Minnie the Moo, and I love it even more now. Its about a very self-centered cow who then has a baby calf and has to take care of it.

  • Any book with touch and feel
Peekaboo books published by DK, there are dog ones, cat, farm, christmas, etc
Books that have the sounds along the sides to press as you read though these are hard to find
    Sandra Boynton
    Brown Bear

We have SO many books, I'm addicted to buying books for LO and we spend probably 30 minutes a night reading books

We have a subscription to Highlights Hello, they send a little book each month and DS LOVES these little books as well

We do have Clifford, Biscuit things like that but he is more interested in the short, rhyming books right now

I also love Bearenstein Bears and can't want until he's more in to books like that
  • I do suggest checking them out at the library first. I try to always do this. Even though I love Sandra Boynton books for example there are a few I just don't care for. Also Amazon generally gives you an "inside peek" so you can read a few pages of a book to see if it's for you.

Also check out Thrift Books. I buy most of DD's books there. Even little board books new are fairly expensive at $7 or more. At thrift books they are gently used (I always look for Great or Good condition, avoid acceptable) and they ship free. I get like 6 books for $20! I do always buy flap books new though since kids are just soooo rough on those!
