Wanting to work from home but...

So a few weeks ago i was in the hospital due to preterm labor. I am already dilated and effaced and still continue to have contractions throughout the day and night.

I am 36 weeks and would really prefer to just work from home now because I feel like the baby could come at any moment and that freaks me out to go into labor at work. At work, I am still required/ needed to walk from meeting rooms all across our work site and it just puts a lot of stress on my body, awful back pain, sciatic nerve pain, and contractions start up again.

I mentioned this to my boss but she was just like "oh, you can cut back on your hours" which I don't want to do because we are still relying on my income at this point as well. When i did mention that working from home would be much better, she completely blew me off...

How would you approach this subject, if I just sat down and told her that i was going to start working from home and that was that?? I plan on returning to work after the baby, I just don't want to leave on a bad note.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

  • Does your company allow people to work from home? Some companies just don't let their employees do this. If it is their policy not to let people work from home then I'm not sure what you can do. Maybe get a note from your doctor and set up a meeting with your boss and hr and have a rational discussion with them? If you plan on returning after your maternity leave I would absolutely not tell your boss that you are doing something and that is that.

  • First do they allow employees to work from home? Even with a doctor's note a company does not have to allow you to work from home. They may start your dissability/maternity leave and that is it. I went into labor at 31 weeks and after they were able to stop it I was put on strict bedrest for another 5 weeks until I gave birth. I was not even given the option. I had to start my maternity leave and that was it. Even this time around there would be no flexability to work from home even though I could technically do my job while being on bedrest. I think without a doctor's note it's hard to really press the point.

  • A more formal meeting might be helpful, but if you're in that many meetings I guess I don't see how working from how will be doable.

  • I had a lot of issues with my boss understanding my needs since I travel A LOT for work and needed to cut back. I hinted around the situation for weeks then finally had to just make him sit and listen to me. My doctor ended up having to write me an excuse to limit what I was being asked to do. It barely worked and he still piled things up for me to do and avoided my needed decrease! I was able to work from home 1 or 2 times a week since about 36 weeks. I would say sit down with your boss and really explain things and see if you can work from home and if they aren't willing to listen then possibly have your doctor contact them. My doctor is very proactive and was willing to call and explain the health concerns I don't know if yours is that way or not.

Either way! Good luck and remember you have to do what is best for you and the baby! Don't take the risk if you don't have to!
