Natural Birth

Better Birth Experience in LA

Hi,

So, I just got a BFP for little Tigger Two a few days ago, and the only thing I'm certain of, is that I want a better birth experience than last time.
The readers digest from DDs birth is the dr broke my water, found meconuim, put me on pitocin and wouldn't let me stand up. She was sunny side up, and since I couldn't stand, she couldn't move, so I eventually got an epidural to avoid a c-section--my BP was skyrocketing from pain. So.... not quite what I had wanted.

I live in LA (Chatsworth) and I would love to start this out from the beginning on a better path.
I'd love any reccomendations for a midwife or an OB who tends to keep things more natural. I'd prefer someone with an ultrasound machine (my last doc had one and getting an U/S every checkup was AMAZING) but that isn't a must.
Last part of the puzzle, any suggestions for insurance? I'm on a temporary insurance at the moment, and ACA plans I'm eligible for aren't impressing me.

TIA

Re: Better Birth Experience in LA

  • I delivered all three of my babies with Jay Goldberg (women's care of Beverly Hills). With my first I had an epidural. With my second two I had completely natural/intervention free births. I delivered all three at cedars. I adore Dr. Goldberg. He's compassionate, caring and hilarious. He makes you feel very safe and never scares you for no good reason. I don't think he is known as a "natural birth" doctor at all because in LA it's rare to have women want to go natural. However, he was totally supportive if all my choices! I will say at cedars it more depends on your nurse since your ob only comes at the very end.

  • Hi! I go to an OB who is pretty old-school and while she's not 100% the MOST gung-ho about natural birth, she has been really supportive so far of my wishes. I also got a great doula who I can recommend. My OB has an ultrasound machine in-office and lots of labs close to the office for blood work and all that.

I also haven't taken my tour yet, but I've heard from some friends that St. Joe's, where she has privileges and where I'll be delivering, has tubs, showers and birthing balls in their birthing suites, and a new staff that is more receptive to natural birth!

  • I can see that I am coming in on this a little late, and I am new around here, but I have a 5 month old daughter and used the UCLA midwives. They are very supportive of natural birth and VBACs but are still in a hospital. I thought of it as a happy medium. I hope you found what you were looking for. :)

  • Im Not at all from LA, but there was a freestanding birth center in LA featured in one of the episodes of "More Business of Being Born." Looked pretty neat. It's on Netflix and is a really great series that I enjoyed, so it's worth a watch anyway! Good luck!

  • Definitely hire a doula! Also, be careful with ultrasounds - the FDA recommends "prudent use" of ultrasound imaging. It is generally considered safe, but can affect tissues in unknown ways.

Best of luck with your birth, hope you have a better experience this time around! :)
