1st Trimester

I'm a wreck...help please!!!

So I had my first U/S today (both internal and external). Doctor was estimating me at almost 9 wks based on LMP, which I knew was wrong. According to FF I am 7 wks 5 days. I got a + OPK on jan 8th and my BFP on January 23rd. Based on the measurements taken at the U/S they are saying I'm only 6 wks and HR is 95. I am really concerned because being only 6 weeks would mean I ovulated around the time of my BFP...which I knew isn't possible. I know I have to be further than 6 weeks and am concerned that baby is measuring small and with a slower HB. How could this be? I explained all of this to them at the DOctor and they had absolutely no answers for me. When I asked if I should be concerned they basically gave me a round-about answer and said things play out how they play out. I am a blubbering mess and any information would be helpful.

Re: I'm a wreck...help please!!!

  • Sorry to hear about your doc visit. Early u/s creates this problem for lots of women. Enough information to establish doubt and worry, but not enough information to provide answers.

IME, docs can be really cavalier dealing with life/death. My early u/s showed no heartbeat and my doc said, 'it's too early to call it.' Like it was a pitch. She said my dates could be off, and we should do another u/s in a week. I knew my dates weren't off like they would need to be... so I answered the difficult question for myself and saved myself a $700 doctor's bill to confirm a mmc diagnosis.

Did they take blood to check your hcg levels? This would give you answers more quickly (like 48 hours to know if levels are rising or falling), but won't change the outcome. If not using a blood test, my guess is you'll go in for another u/s in a week or two and they will see what has changed.

  • It's a little weird that your doc gave you so very little information.  Is this your regular doctor that you have always gone to?  What did they say the next step was for you?

Yes, but I only have seen the nurse practitioner, never even met the doctor. They want me to come back in 2 weeks for another u/s. I'm going to be a mess until then.

  • Unfortunately this exact same thing happened to me. I should have been 7.5 weeks, baby measured 6 weeks and had a heart rate in the 90s. They had me come back 2 weeks later, no heartbeat.

With the slow growth and especially the low heart rate, those are bad signs. Limbo is terrible, I'm sorry you're having to go through this.

I agree with the others-- insist on another appt ASAP and/or find another doc. And regardless of the results, get yourself another doctor.
  • They were so rude to me. When I explained about when I ovulated ( and therefore conceived) the Nurse practitioner said "well, I don't know, I don't know when you had sex". I just told you when I ovulated, if I hadn't had sex then I wouldn't be pregnant.

When I asked if I should be concerned she said "we never tell anyone to be concerned, we tell them to be watchful. It's going to play out how it plays out."

Also, she first told me to take excedrine for headaches, then recanted saying Tylenol. Then she said I could take excedrine pm but she couldn't remember if it had acetaminophen in it or aspirin. Wtf???

Nope, they didn't take a single drop of blood today. They do want me to come back in two weeks, though.

What? I would find a new doctors office now...maybe one with a nurse that actually knows how conception works. FYI Excedrin PM is "safe" but if you are in pain, take tylenol, and if you need a sleep aid, take benadryl or unisom. No reason to take combination products when most of the time you only need one of the active ingredients.

Thanks,I plan to call over to a different doctors office tomorrow. I'll explain the situation and see where they want me to go from there.

  • This is honestly one of the worst things I have ever had to go through. I keep hoping I'll wake up from this nightmare. I'm devastated and preparing for a loss but still hoping and praying for the best :( this has pretty much consumed my every thought.

  • There should definitely be bloodwork done! This is the first thing both of my doctors did with both pregnancies. Your HCG counts alone could answer your question.

If there was doubt blood work would be very helpful. My doctors office didn't do blood work until 16 weeks. All offices are different.

  • I'm so sorry you are in limbo. Unfortunately nobody is going to be able to give you answers right now. That is the tough part of pregnancy... waiting. They could do another US and compare, but nothing is really going to ease your mind besides a better US. Did they say they would give another US soon?
  • Well, we got our answer. Today's u/s showed little to no growth and no heartbeat. Guess we are going to be saying goodbye. Thank you ladies for all of your help and advice.

not it's not. Early u/s are very accurate.

OP: ask for bloodwork next time if you're really concerned.

ETA: nm. I just saw your update. I'm really sorry for your loss.

The margin of error depending on u/s and the specific measurement is +/- 3-7 days.

Again, OP, I am so so sorry. :(

  • Sadly, the same thing happened to me this summer.  LO was measuring a week behind what I absolutely knew it should be. We heard at HB of 95 and measuring 6w1d when I knew we should be at least 7w. No one would listen to me and told me everything was fine.  It wasn't until 11w4d, that I found out I had a MMC and LO's heart stopped beating at 6w3d.  If I had pushed for another U/S, I would not have spent more than 5 weeks thinking my baby was fine, after he/she was gone.

If I were in your shoes, I would call our OB and ask for another U/S next week.  There is no reason to make you wait two weeks.  If they won't accommodate you, based on the way they treated you at your appt, I would look into a new OB.
It's too late. It's been two weeks and baby's heart has stopped beating sometime during that time frame. This is unfortunately a mmc, I'm devastated.
