Este or Estee

As a nickname for Esther.

Re: Este or Estee

  • I pronounce them differently, so I guess it depends on what sound you're going for?

  • It depends on how you want people to pronounce it. Este looks like it'd be pronounced Est-ay and Estée looks like it could be pronounced Est-eee. And no, people won't consider the pronunciation of the cosmetic brand. They'll find a way to screw it up.

  • Esther really is already short enough (and adorable). Given that both NN you posted have the same amount of syllables and almost the same amount of letters as the name Esther, I would say a NN is unnecessary.

  • Estee.

    So cute!

  • I don't really get having a NN for a name that's only 2 syllables anyway. How are you trying to pronounce it? EST-aye or Est-EE?

  • My childhood bestie growing up was named Esther, and she never went by a nn.

  • Some names just don't have good nicknames. Esther is one of them. I would either skip the nn entirely or go with something completely unrelated to the name Esther.

  • If it's pronounced "Es-tee," I think of "testie" or "testicle." Sorry.

Estie.  This is what an old classmate of mine named Esther used.

There are plenty of nicknames that are as long as or longer than the full name.  Sometimes the point is to have a more kiddie version of a name that seems too serious on a toddler.

  • Neither. Esther is short enough.

Unless you give her the middle name Lauder. Then Estée for suuuuuure.
    B-)
  • I really like the name Esther, but not the nn's you listed. My favorite nn for Esther is Essie.

    Woah.  No.

The accent over the e makes it pronounced "est-ay."

No accent over the e and spelled Este means it would be pronounced "esss-t" (like west without the W).
Without bothering to look up the pronunciation, I thought Este would be pronounced Estie/or at least I figured that's what OP was going for. Huh. Either way, it doesn't really make sense to me to use any of these for a NN for Esther. These options have a completely different feel to me.

Sure, you and I know that. But the accent was only added when I typed it because of autocorrect. Unless you always make sure there's an accent a lot of people won't know what pronunciation to go with. Nevertheless, I don't like it as a nickname for Esther either. Choose either Esther or Estée. Or Este.

  • Est-ee sounds like teste (testicles) or I want to switch the letters and say Etsy..

Esther is a perfectly lovely name that doesn't really need a NN at all IMO.
