Monday (Tuesday) morning vents

Looks like we didn't have our Monday morning vents yesterday with the 3 day weekend. Any vents for today?

Here's mine:
I get that no one really likes the administrative aspects of managing people but I wish those tasks could be taken seriously for just one day a year. My annual review was tasked out to some one who literally can not author one accurate sentence about what I do. Forget the subjective stuff of whether I'm any good at what I do. He literally does not know *what* I do - as in, factually verifiable information - even though I've tried to engage him on things in the past. He's not interested in what I do, so I've tried to stay out of his hair, only going to him when I need his signature, but I had no idea that my review would be tasked out to this guy. It wasn't like this last year and now I have to go into an "annual review" in which I'll be introducing my portfolio to him and correcting the factually incorrect statements he's recommending for my review. There's no way I can get a fair assessment in this situation because he has no basis from which to comment on the quality of my work. Really frustrating after I put in so much extra work this year.

  • I feel like a bad mom today. I made DD go to DC even though she has a bad cold b/c I have missed so much work lately b/c of snow. My mom is going to pick her up, so she'll only be there for like 2hrs, but I still feel guilty about it. Especially because I don't even like this job and would much rather be home with her.

  • I've been nauseated all morning (definitely not pregnant) and it's REALLY annoying. Like, I'm hungry, but can't seem to eat. I was finally able to get a small bowl of oatmeal down and some water, but geeze.

At least it doesn't look like I'm not coming down with a stomach bug, since I'm not getting worse.

  • Thanks @LibraryChica, my morale has definitely taken a hit because of this long drawn out mess. I think I'm just so jaded by it now that I can't even muster the outrage it deserves. Just finished up the conversation, and like I expected, no specific feedback re my work. When I asked why I received such & such rankings in such & such category, I was given a broad philosophical response - oh, people generally get such & such ranking - and nothing specific to me or my work. When asked if there was anything I should be doing differently, he couldn't name one thing. He was also surprised to find out what took up 25% of my time.

    Oy oy oy.

Me, too. Except I am sure I am getting a stomach bug because DS has it.
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • So, I got a promotion last week.  Kind of a big one.  I told a couple of work friends about it, but wanted to wait to discuss it until it was officially announced.  My boss announced it today in a huge meeting (60+ people), which included my staff.  Of the 20-something people that directly or indirectly report to me, 2 people have said congratulations.  2.

I feel really sh!tty about it.  They must really dislike me (as a manager and/or a person), even though I give them a lot of autonomy, flexibility, feedback, and praise/credit for their work.

Guess I'm having a little pity party...

I feel your pain. Same thing happened to me - promotion, big announcement, and only the two newest employees congratulated me. No one else in the company or on the team has said anything. If anything, life has gotten worse since it was made official. At least you and I know we're awesome, right?
    LOL Yes!!!

I feel bad for the other kids at your DC too. Now they will likely get sick. Couldn't your mom or DH have stayed home with your sick child if you had used up all your leave? It's unfair to the other kids and parents. Ugh this makes me so nervous to send DD to preschool in the fall.

    BFP#1 10/17/11, m/c due to SCH 11/21/11 @ 8w4d; BFP#2 2/26/12, baby girl arrived 11/1/12; BFP#3 12/3/13, EDD: 8/18/14.

Where do you think she got sick in the first place? She didn't technically have to be home (rule is 101 fever). If I kept them home for colds, they would never be in school.

My mom couldn't have come earlier b/c she had to dig out of the snow first and drive over. And DH leaves for work at like 5:30 in the morning so unless we know the night before that a child is too sick for school, he is long gone before any of us are awake (which is also why I've got stuck with most of the snow days).

I understand how you feel, but did this promotion by chance change who your direct, or indirect reports will now report to? Basically, does your promotion have the ability to change, or impact them and their work? If so, were announcements also made that dealt with these changes? If not, I would say most are leery about what your promotion will mean to them and their job and their position. If yes, maybe they are unhappy with the changes that your promotion will mean.

If it is a promotion in title only and essentially nothing will change for any of them, and they don't know how it will change for you, maybe they don't see it as that big of a deal?
