Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Next step p/t

DD doesn't wear a diaper all day while we are at home and uses the potty really well with almost no accidents. I'm just not sure what the next step is? I'm sure this is a totally dumb question but I don't what to do next, as in when we go somewhere or during bed time/nap time. Do I just put panties on her and hope for the best? She wears a diaper to bed still and she also still sleeps in her crib. So maybe it's time to switch to a toddler bed so she can get up as needed? Any advice would be greatly apprieciated! thanks.

  • When we PT our kids we go straight to underwear and they never wear diapers again, not for naps or bedtime (the first few months I had them were a diaper cover over their underwear for naps and bedtime).  My kids were young when PT (14, 15 & 17 months old) so I felt it was too confusing to say stay dry during the day but you can pee in your pants at naps and bedtime.  We had no issues with nighttime training.  My kids go to bed @ 7:30-8pm.  Whenever we went to bed (generally @ 10-11pm), we'd wake them up and go potty and they went right back to bed.  We did this for 2 reasons- it told them we expect them to stay dry and that its okay to go potty in the middle of the night if you have to go.  We only had to do this for @ 1 month (my 14 month old we're still doing it because she just started wearing underwear a week ago) after that they rarely ever woke up and if they did they just called out into the monitor that they had to go potty (due to their age they were/are still in cribs) but they always woke up dry.  As for when you go out and about- put her in underwear.  Show confidence in her.  Accidents happen and its okay.  If you really nervous about it you can always put a pull up diaper cover on over her underwear and it will contain some of the mess but I think I would just trust her. Have her go potty before you leave the house and when you get to where you are going just ask if she has to go and before you leave have her go (heck I'm an adult and I always try to go before I get into a car!- lol).
