Working Moms

Deposit

Hi,
I am 7 months pregnant and we found a family daycare two miles away from where will live. I plan to
Take 4 months off so going back in sept.

I tried calling other day cares and
no one is calling me back and I know infants slots are limited, would you give a deposit this early?

Re: Deposit

  • I will be going back in August and we registered about a month ago. I would recommend putting a deposit down so you know you have a spot.

  • Well, I put deposits down for both of my girls before I was out of the first trimester, but in both cases, I was living near a large city where infant daycare in a center had a very long waiting list.  For me, knowing that I might lose the deposit (and with DD1, I did in fact register her at a new center that I liked more when a spot opened up the week before I returned from ML and walked away from the deposit) was worth the peace of mind of knowing I had a place for her that I liked.

How big is the deposit?  How much do you like this place?  Do you absolutely need to return to work on a certain schedule?  Do you have any options (like your partner taking time off or family) to care for LO temporarily?

If you must return to work by a certain date and you haven't been able to find any other options for childcare, I'd try to reserve a place as soon as possible.
  • As others have said, if you know this is where you want your child to go, then go ahead and put a deposit down.  For DS, we ended up on wait lists at 3 places and he didn't get into one until his first birthday.  We had him in a back up option until then.  When I found out I was pregnant again, I told the daycare right away and have already put a deposit in so I don't have to deal with that again.
  • We put a deposit down in January for our new LO to start at one center in July. She is due in April, expected to have to be delivered in March. We also have her on the waitlist at another center, and to get on the waitlist we had to pay an application fee of 150 bucks. We find out in March whether or not she gets in, and if she does, we'll have to pay the deposit in April for her to start in late August.

The deposit at the 1st center won't be refundable if we go with the 2nd center, but it was only a few hundred dollars so it's NBD. The deposit at the 2nd center will be a full month's tuition which would hurt quite a bit more.

  • thanks. my problem is I don't have much of a selection because no other places are calling me back! It has everything we are looking for so I will look into making a deposit now.
  • I put a deposit down 11 months in advance for an infant spot.
