Benefits Question

**exits lurkdom**

Hi Ladies, quick question for you:

I just accepted a new job (yay!!), and was reviewing the benefits package last night. But I couldn't find a thing in there specifically outlining maternity leave/STD or anything of that nature. The only thing I found is that disability of any kind is paid by the employer and I'd be eligible after 3 months. DH and I are talking about TTC within the next year, but I need more info on what will be covered/how long I need to be there before I will be covered. Is that generally something you have to ask your employer about? I was really hoping it would be outlined in the benefits package and I wouldn't have to bring it up.

Re: Benefits Question

  • Congrats!  If a company doesn't have a maternity leave policy (and most don't), your leave is usually covered under short-term disability.  You usually get a percentage of your salary, with a capped amount, for 6 weeks for a vaginal delivery or 8 weeks for a c-section.

Companies often use the start date of pregnancy to determine eligibility, so STD paid for childbirth would only cover an employee who's been at the company for three months before becoming pregnant.  Take the job, wait a few months, then have fun.  :)

  • I agree you should take the job and wait 3 months then TTC. You could ask a generic question to hr about whether disability covers ST and LT. I wouldn't ask anything else or you will make it obvious you are thinking about getting pregnant.
