Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Routine

My ds is 6 1/2 months old and was wondering when you're supposed to start a routine to put him to bed at night. I'm happy if he's in bed by 10 and it's crazy. Maybe if I started a night routine it'll go better.

I would definately start a routine if you dont have one. My son is 8 months, he eats dinner which is some solids, bath, little play time, then bottle. I read him a story, rock for a few minutes and he is out within 2-3 mins. He sleeps from 7:30-8pm to 6-6:30 am. Our routine works for us, but you will need to find what works for you two. Consitancy is the key. GL

  • We have had some variation of a routine since day one.  LO has always dictated what we do but we try to stick with it on a daily basis.  The nighttime routine has always been the same, the times have just changed to earlier and earlier based on her needs.  We now start our bedtime routine at 6:30 and she sleeps till 6:30-7 every day.
  • Wow! That's awesome that all of you get baby to bed so early, the time your baby goes to sleep for the night, mine is taking a nap. He wakes up 30-40 minutes later like his nap. And wakes every 2 hrs at night. And I do have a routine but he doesn't care what I want. :)

We've have had a "routine" since about 12 weeks old...when I went back to work. We do  pjs, a bottle and I rock him to sleep usually starting at about 6PM. Sometimes though he is super tired and we need to start at 530PM and once in a while we start at 630PM if he isn't showing signs of tiredness but we try to keep it within that half hour zone. J doesn't fight to go to bed (naps are a completely different story) and it seems like our little schedule is soothing to him. Lately he has been going right to sleep.

A few nights we do a bath but he has super dry skin and sometimes  like on those 530 bedtime start nights he just can't handle taking a bath.

Also I want to note that it doesn't matter what time we start bedtime- 530 6 or 630PM he still wakes up around 5-530AM- usually closer to 5. So he isn't sleeping any later with a later bedtime or waking up any earlier with an earlier bedtime.
  • We've had a routine since day 1. Baby is asleep by 7pm and up for the day around 7am.

  • My daughter is about the same age and although we have had a loose routine since about 4 months with bath, bottle, then bed, we recently made it a little more structured and made sure everything after bath time happened in her room with low light. She used to go to bed around 9:30 and with the new routine has been going to bed at 8. Just keep it simple and make sure it is something both of you enjoy or else it won't stick. Good luck!
  • J13 mom here with an eight month old-

We've had a bedtime routine since E was a few weeks old.  It basically involved a bath about an hour before bedtime, PJs and then nursing/bottle.  As she became older and started sleeping for longer periods of time, the times became more set.  She's now getting a bath around 7 p.m., with a bottle, story and bedtime between 7:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. We also wake her up at 6 a.m. on days that she goes to daycare, which is three times a week.
  • Since we could give her a bath we have had a routine.  She has been on solids for a while so it is dinner at 6, bath at 7, nurse after that and bed by 8.  It works will

  • We've had the same nighttime routine with DS since he was about 3 months old. Some veggies around 6, playing until bath time around 7:15, massage after bath, nurse, sleep by 8:30.

  • She has had bedtime routines since she was about 3m. Some days it goes out the window...but her and DH have their own routine(I work nights). We are just now starting a daytime routine...and its making life a lot less hectic for me
