Clueless on Pumping

Hi! Please help direct me to a website or blog on here about this subject. I feel lost which is making me anxious.

Here are my questions:
What do I need?
What do I get through insurance?
How do I get it through insurance?
What things do I not get through insurance that I'll have to buy myself?
Which brands/products are best?

Thanks :)

To answer your insurance questions, you will need to call them and find that out directly from them.

My insurance company is covering a pump but I have specific rules and choices for getting them. Some others are not entitled to a pump. So it really just depends on your policy.

  • Yeah, nobody here can answer your insurance questions only your insurance company can. There are needs and then there are wants. You will need a pump and bottles. I don't think any insurance covers bottles. There are definitely other things out there to making pumping easier or more convenient, so nit stuff you need and not stuff insurance would be likely to cover.

  • As far as "accessories" not part of the pump itself, I'd recommend getting a hands-free pumping bra if you plan on doing a lot of pumping at work, etc. Simple Wishes is the brand I have and it was awesome. I liked being able to snack, play on my phone, do whatever while sitting there pumping and not worry about spilling milk/bottles. I highly doubt this would be covered by insurance, but it's around $30.

  • Kellymom is great.  I also found the breasfeeding board on here to be helpful, but more so once DS was here and I was in the middle of it all.  It'd probably be worthwhile to post a similar question there, though, ahead of time to get more "in the moment" perspective.

Not quite what you asked but since this post brought it to mind I would also add to be prepared for the demands of pumping. There are now lots of resources for nursing that help you to know even though it is natural, that does not mean it is necessarily easy. Well, pumping is not necessarily easy either and not necessarily easier than nursing. Not meant as discouragement, just more an FYI be prepared for it to be and feel like work.

  • Another vote for Kellymom. As for accessories, I used my Medela PISA pump, a hands-free pumping bra, and Medela quickclean wipes (so I didn't have to wash the parts between each pump session at work). I also had a rubbermaid container that I used to transport the pumped milk from home to daycare.  I sent one container of about 15 oz and let daycare portion it out as needed.  I found that was easier than portioning out bottles, since they sometimes want more or less, depending on a growth spurt.  I didn't want to waste my milk by portioning out too much, and then she didn't drink it all.  Good luck!
