Present for MIL... suggestions?

MIL has been our DC for almost 2 months now. We live abroad so she had to leave her country even when she has a very sick sister. I know it's not a sacrifice for her as she loves babysitting and spending alone time with Gerardo. Anyway, she is leaving in 10 days and then my mom is coming over for 3 months to do the same thing.

I want to give my MIL a present for all the effort and because she has been so nice to me and G (also helping with house chores and what-not). It should be something small because she is traveling by plane. Any ideas?

My only idea is a photo in a nice frame of her and G together, but it seems a bit too common. What do you think?

Re: Present for MIL... suggestions?

  • It's not so easy. She is literally full of real jewelry, I'm talking about rubies and diamonds the sizes of peas :P (is quite common that mothers will pass on a ton of jewels to their daughters where she comes from in Italy, she had a couple of aunts who didn't have daughters so the jewels multiplied for her LOL)...

    It's so difficult! I am a horrible present-giver, I have no imagination :(

  • You can do a book/calendar on shutterfly of her time with you and G and have it before she leaves.

  • The best gift I ever got my mom was a necklace that says "Gigi" on it. She won't take it off. I know you said your mil has a ton but maybe she would like a sentimental piece? I have a personalized necklace with the kids names and birthstones and it was my favorite gift ever.
  • A picture locket is such a cute idea @llmg0715 :)

I think a nice frame and a photo of the two of them is also a great idea. I'd probably go with that. Easy to pack and it won't just get stuck in a drawer somewhere (hopefully).
  • Photo book? My family love when we put together photo books of the kids for them. They are easy to travel and not too expensive.

  • Thank you ladies! I think I'll go for the photobook or a photo drawing/painting of the two of them. I got quite some nice pics of those 2 together ^^

@iand loveandyou if you marry an Italian, you marry his family.. if I wouldn't have a good relationship with her we would probably be divorced by now LOL also because of the fact that we live abroad, when she visits it's 24/7 MIL time, I consider myself lucky to have her in my life as she is more like a friend than a MIL... she has confided in me issues that she hasn't even spoken about with my SIL :D she's a SS

  • You could always get something small for her to take with her on the plane and send something larger to her home for when she gets home. She sounds pretty amazing and very generous. I'm not sure what your budget Is like but could you have a car service pick her up from the airport and have a thank you card with a spa giftcard in it to tell her that she spoiled you all for monthsbits time to spoil herself. Really the cost wouldn't even come close to what you would have spent on child care. I'm jealous of your MIL!!

  • @sandraynic    Ive thought this same thing over and over. At least it helps me to be supportive when E is that old!
  • I would do a photo, some shiny piece & a phone card? Maybe some skype international minutes?

Also, you can put together a shutterfly book of photos & send it to her home. It is a nice surprise when she gets home. :)
