Progression of crawling...

LO has started (just within the past three days) getting up on her hands and knees and rocking back and forth but still hasn't quite figured out crawling.  She barrel rolls all over the place and will turn her whole body around using her arms.  For moms of crawling LO's - how long after they started getting up and rocking did you have a crawling baby?  Do I need to do some more baby proofing this week?

Re: Progression of crawling...

  • E rocked on her hands and knees for FOREVER before actually making a move to crawl (aka 4ish weeks of growling and rocking that felt like an eternity). But every kiddo is different! Can't hurt to get serious about babyproofing now - it's inevitable ;)

  • We aren't crawling yet. She scootches around on her tummy and rolls a lot, but not actual crawling.

It sounds like you are close, so I vote for baby proof sooner than later.

It doesn't hurt to have it done early, but baby could pay the price with an injury if you wait too long, KWIM?
  • Ty has been getting up on hands and knees for a few weeks but still army crawls. He hasn't figured it out yet...
  • Haddock hasn't figured it out yet either, I'm thankful...I think?

He'll rock back and forth a little but mainly he just likes to roll around to wherever he wants to go.

We don't have any shelves that he can reach downstairs so that's kind of nice, and where he spends most of his time anyway.  I vote for going ahead and baby proofing, better safe than sorry :)

We've been looking for baby gates, but I can't decide which ones I want, they're all such eye sores.
  • Yep, Zack has been getting up on all fours, rocking and lunging for a month or so now and just finally crawled about a foot and a half a couple days ago.  But he still prefers to get around by rolling and army crawling.

I remember it taking much longer with DD too once she was up.  We thought she was going to crawl any day for a long time.

But early baby proofing won't hurt anything.

  • We had about two weeks warning. DS did the rocking thing for about two weeks. One day he just started crawling. The first time it was a little rocky. By the next day, he was a pro. Now he's really fast and into everything everywhere.
  • About a week, maybe two then something clicked and he took off! When our pedi saw him rocking she suggested baby proofing then.

  • Baby C rocked for a few weeks before really started being able to move
  • @asbromle We bought our baby gate at BabiesRUs and it happens to be the same color wood as the railing at th stairs and overall isn't an eyesore. I will try to find a link later if you'd like.

As far as crawling, this is totally a babies gonna baby question. LO rocked on her hands and knees for less than 10 days and now jets around the floor. She is pulling herself to standing on everything she can get her baby hands on. Depends on the baby.
  • My baby just crawled for the first time yesterday. He started rolling all over the place and spinning in order to get what he wanted about two months ago. He got up on his knees about a month and a half ago. It will come soon I swear! I know it's exciting to wait for the crawl! I would babyproof now just to be safe.
