Tylenol?!

I was lurking around the 3-6month board and saw a couple posts about giving Tylenol for teething. I guess some pediatricians say do it, and others say don't. Mine recommended it for when LO is clearly teething, irritable, and in pain. It works like a charm. I certainly don't want to make it a regular thing. But I also don't want DD screaming in pain.

Just wondering what other S13 mamas are doing or what your pedis are saying about Tylenol use.

Re: Tylenol?!

  • My pediatrician is fine with it, but I do other methods first - teething tablets, orajel, distraction, cold teether, etc.

  • I always gave it for teething, and once they turn 6 mo I started giving Motrin if it was really bad. (Top teeth and molars were worse for DD1). I gave tylonel to Lexi the last two nights bc her bottom two teeth just popped through. I try to only give it before bed and MOTN if necessary. Rarely I would have to give it before nap time for DD1.

  • Orajel is dangerous. It can numb their throats and cause their coughing reflex not to work. The benzocaine free is safer but way less effective I have heard. I still with tylonel or Motrin.

  • Yes I don't use orajel for a few reasons. Here's the FDA recommendation:

My pedi is fine with it. DS has had a few fevers so we've used it then. I also give him some when he is a major crab butt and nothing else I do makes him happy and he seems uncomfortable. He's been teething for 2+ months now.
  • My pedi said it is fine in moderation. We give it to DS before bed if he has a fever from shots or illness.

  • My pedi only suggested Tylenol for teething.  She said that it's a safe and effective way to relieve the pain.  She is very anti teething gels and tablets even the homeopathic ones.  I actually gave tylenol last night because she was a screaming mess every time we laid her down.  It helped us both get some rest.  I don't make it an every night habit though.
  • I given my LO tylenol probably 3 or 4 times. The first time was for his shots, and the other times were in all in the middle of the night when he was awake crying/screaming and I couldn't soothe him. I'm assuming he couldn't sleep because his gums hurt. It has always helped him relax and go back to sleep on those nights.

  • I use Tylenol and teething tablets. If she's having a really bad day, I'll give Tylenol about an hour before bedtime so it kicks in when she needs to go down...I found that really helpful!
