Second/Third Time Moms - Reusing bottles and nipples?

Anyone here planning on re-using their bottles/nipples from their first baby?  I saved all of them from my first baby, but then I've been reading articles that say you shouldn't re-use the nipples.  That was news to me.  So did you reuse them for your second/third babies?  I would definitely get rid of any that are cracked, but I thought that if they were in good shape, I would be good to go. Thanks in advance!

Re: Second/Third Time Moms - Reusing bottles and nipples?

  • I recycled all bottles, nipples, pacifiers and sippy cups. Not because I read any research telling me to, but because reusing then skeeved me out.

I'm pretty sure this was an irrational decision.

  • I would if they were silicone and in good shape, but I had latex and don't feel they hold up as well. I have several friends tho who have reused nipples baby to baby with no issues tho

  • if it's plastic, I wouldn't reuse it

I threw away all our old stuff once dd was done with it, plastic can only be used so many times before it starts leaching stuff into the liquid

  • I didn't think about the plastic bottles breaking down @Americaninoz.  They're Tommy Tippee and will be about 2 years old. They should be BPA free.

If someone had not mentioned the articles to me, I don't think it would have occurred to me that you weren't supposed to do that.   :\">

Thanks for all the input !

  • We're planning on reusing the same bottles/nipples we used with DD. The nipples are silicone and we'll reuse any that are in good shape and toss the ones that aren't. She's only 19 months so they aren't that old and she only used them about a year and a half. I think if there were a bigger age gap between DD and this little one or if she stuck with bottles longer I would toss the old stuff, but all of it looks like it's in good shape so I feel OK reusing it. I can definitely see why people get new stuff though so you should do whatever you're comfortable with.

  • I use playtex drop in liner bottles so I'll def be reusing those.(obv not the liners lol) And I plan to boil the nipples to give them a good cleaning to use those as well. DS only used 3 pacifiers for a few months so I'll boil those and use those. As long as this lo likes these nipples.

  • I kept the smaller bottles that weren't used too long but I trashed the bigger ones. Idk, we'll see what the smaller ones look like when I dig them out. I really don't think it's that big of a deal if they were used in the last couple years and are still in good shape. I mean a lot of my other kitchen dishes are plastic and have been used for years so...

  • I'm just replacing the nipples. I made sure everything was thoroughly dried before packing bottles and caps away in storage, but will definitely re-sterilize them.

  • I'm using all the same but it's only because they aren't that old anyway and I typically EBF so they don't get too much use.

  • I plan to resterilize and reuse whatever still looks good to go. Everything was carefully cared for, packed, and stored. Especially the smaller bottles and slower flow nipples so those saw the least use.

  • I'm just replacing nipples, the bottles just got put away. I loaded them into a tote and sent them down to the basement just to get our BFP a month later, so since the kiddos are so close in age I'm not concerned about any issues with the plastic leaching.

  • I am replacing the nipples and buying all new pacis.

  • I used drop-ins with my DD, so I will def be reusing my bottles, but not the nipples b/c DD is 6.5 yo and using nipples that old just doesn't seem like a good idea!

    This.

I'll check the nipples to see if DS made any of the holes bigger with his tongue as some kids tend to do. Anything funky will get tossed.

  • I was planning on replacing the nipples but reusing the bottles. The were all in really good shape but I will check them out when I unpack them to be sure. DD barely used a paci but I was not planning on reusing those, I threw them out already so I will get a few new ones.

  • Nope, we used plastic and replaced them in between DS and DD and will get new again with this little one. The plastic in bottles does break down over time making it unsafe for use. I think I may opt for glass bottles this time, though.

  • I am reusing everything just re-sterilizing it all. DS will be 20 mos old when LO is born. They didn't even get packed away, they are still in my baby supply cabinet
  • I am reusing the glass bottles & some of the newer Tommy Tippee bottles. Some of the nipples are almost new, so I will reuse those.
I will get all new pacifiers.
  • I will, again another one who EBF'd and didn't use them much last time, I assume it will be the same this time.

  • I reused all nipples/ bottles with DS#2. He turned out fine. :) Starting all over with this baby though because we got rid of everything.
