Sleep Regression! vent

I've never really experienced the horrors of a sleep regression, I would always just read the stories you guys post about it and thank goodness my little monkey was still sleeping pretty well. Well I believe he is going through a sleep regression now and it is awful and heart breaking! He won't nap during the day and I can't get him to sleep at night! I'm at a complete loss and don't know what I can do for him to help make it easier. He hardly ever says 'ma ma' but once I lie him down for bed he's screaming and crying, calling 'ma ma', naturally, I just want to run in there and snuggle him all night. The second I walk in to help calm him down he's completely fine and ready to play. He's always been a good sleeper and normally sleeps slightly more than the average baby so this seems so new to me. At least when he was a newborn I knew what he needed but now I have no idea! What has helped you and your LO during a sleep regression, extra cuddles? Sticking to his schedule? Being more flexible? I am kind of just trying to go with the flow with it but I'm afraid it'll create bad sleep habits when it's all over.

  • I was going to ask about teeth too. We've had a few abnormal nights and I think it is her teeth. She has several molars coming in.

  • That's what I was thinking, maybe he's teething or has an ear infection.  Will he sleep if you hold him, like in a rocking chair?  If he will sleep while upright I would suspect an ear infection.  If he won't sleep like that either I would suspect teeth.  Is he drooling a ton or chewing on stuff?

If it is sleep regression then what worked for Morgan was a warmer than normal bath before bedtime, a rubdown with nighttime lotion and rocking to sleep.  She would sleep much better during her sleep regression when I did this and stayed consistent.  I had to be flexible though because she was sleeping almost like a newborn during this time.

Good luck, whatever it is I hope it passes soon!!!

  • We have something similar whenever her teeth are bugging her (new tooth about to come in). If rocking, etc. doesn't calm her down, we'll sometime try a little Tylenol. It seems like if she can get comfortable, she's okay.

  • Sorry, my internet has been down. I actually got him checked today. He had stopped playing with his ears so I figured it was just his teeth but he started playing with them a lot last night, pushing his stuffed animal to his ear, so I made an appt this morning. They said he had a a little fluid in his left ear and to call them if he seemed to get worse and they'd prescribe an antibiotic. So I guess its not sleep regression after all. I am definitely loving the extra snuggles but I feel so bad for him.
