Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

crib chewing?

so ds is almost 23 months old and recently starting chewing on his crib.  i think it's out of anxiety...he's been waking in the middle of the night and crying for us.  (we do go get him if his crying persists after a couple of minutes...but i digress)  the chewing isn't so bad, is more like tiny teeth scrapes.  i've since covered the rails, but does anybody else's kid(s) do this?
thanks!

Re: crib chewing?

  • DS doesn't do it yet,but I think it's pretty common for kids to chew.  I don't think they would sell chew guards if it wasn't common.

  • My son did it around 12 months, right after he got his first few teeth. He did it for a week or so and then stopped and hasn't done it since (long enough to mark up the crib pretty good though!).

I will say that those teeth protectors are a bit scary. The little boy I used to watch figured out how to unvelcro and untie his and ended up all tangled in it and screaming, it was pretty scary.

  • thanks ladies...i guess i wanted to hear that it is common...i looked it up on google and i think the last time someone posted about this was like in 2010.  thanks again!
  • She does it all the time. She used to do it more around 8-10 months. I bought a fancy fabric protector and within a month she figured out how to take it off. I just let her be now.

  • I put a fabric protector on the long rail early on. Once he could stand, DS started chewing on the side rails. I ended up getting ones for the side rails, too.
  • We use a hard plastic protector that I got at BRU...Safety 1st brand maybe? It's four deprecate pieces that snap on, so you wouldn't have to worry about the tangling if he got them off. That said, DD has chewed her crib rail for months and now she chews the guard--best $15 I've ever spent. ;-)

  • DD never chewed the crib. DS's looks like a prisoner marking each day he has been in his cell. By the time I noticed he was doing it the crib was pretty much ruined so I didn't even bother getting a protector.
