Advice - Changing jobs?

I currently work in a sector that is notoriously unstable. From May to October, I work crazy hours and from November to April I work very part time (sometimes 1 day a weeks). During the season, I am run off my feet and sometimes I bring my work home with me. However, I love the job, I love the people, and I can use all of my education to support my position. One of the reasons I completely the degrees and chose the career that I did was because I thought I was done having children. I am now the mother of a 17 year old and an 11 week old...

I'm thinking of making a career change to something that is a little more stable - steady hours, steady pay, and less stress. I have almost 20 years administrative experience, and I've seen several jobs in my area working in an office and I was considering applying.

My husband doesn't want me to change jobs. He wants me to follow my passion, and he thinks that I'll be bored working in an office. But, I feel like I have to make a change in order to be a better parent. I'm so confused. What would you do in my position?

Re: Advice - Changing jobs?

  • I'm a museum educator. There are not a lot of jobs out there in my field unless we wanted to leave the province, which is definitely not something we want to do.

I also work for a private museum that doesn't have guaranteed funding year over year. So, while I am currently working f/t for 6 month, p/t for 6 months it could change to permanent part time.

I was thinking it doesn't hurt to start applying.

  • There is a glut of teachers, so a lot of those other positions related to education are taken up by teachers who can't find jobs in the pubic or Catholic systems.

I don't have any background in art, so that would be out and in most cases, you need a degree in Library Sciences to get a job in a library.
