post-baby pooping

It's the worst, amiright? I've been mainlining stool softeners and going easy on the painkillers and slamming water and I still dread each infrequent trip to the bathroom. My first post baby poop was almost as bad as labor, I swear.

Sorry for the tmi but I had to share with people who understand! DH thinks I'm dying every time he hears me in the bathroom!

  • OMG, I was seriously just about to do a poop post! For me, I'm just happy I pooped today and it was NO BIG DEAL! I've been taking Miralax and Colace since the c/s on Monday and NOTHING. I was really scared b/c the last 2 times after the c/s it was pretty darn traumatic. Then today, I was just sitting here thinking, man, what IS that feeling? I don't feel right. And then I literally jumped up and said "OMG I have to poop!!" DH was like, umm thanks for sharing? I'm totally crediting the Miralax... I don't think the colace would have done much alone (it didn't last time).

  • I agree re: the Colace! I took it every time it was offered at the hospital and it didn't seem to make a difference. Since then I've taken Dulcolax and today I added Miralax which did help but it still hurt. I think I do have hemorrhoids but I've been too scared to really feel around down there and confirm! I think today's efforts confirmed it, though. The things we put up with for these kiddos! Good thing they're cute.

  • I asked for a suppository.  It was the best decision I made.

My first when I was in the hospital wasn't bad, because those nurses made sure I was good about taking Colace and saying hydrated. When I got home, on the other hand.... An entirely different story! OUCH!

This is a good point. I'm at home now and I was thinking that now that things are moving I could stop the meds but maybe I will keep the colace and up the fiber intake.

  • I've been really soft since birth. Been eating tons of fruits and veggies. For those of you on pain killers- they really cause constipation in me so I've just been taking Motrin.

  • I have stitches, so counter pressure has been my friend. Who knew I would need that AFTER birth:(
  • I took colace for a week and I didn't think it was bad at all. Maybe I got lucky? Probably depends on your tear degree, too.

I totally agree about the colace. They gave it to me in the hospital last time and it did nothing for me. I started taking Miralax once I got home and was finally able to go after a couple of days of that. It was a week after my c/s! Hoping that it won't be so bad this time. Glad to hear it wasn't for you!

  • I took colace for a week and I didn't think it was bad at all. Maybe I got lucky? Probably depends on your tear degree, too.

Yes, a lot of it has to do with tear degree for vaginal birth. For C/S, your intestines basically shut down during the surgery so first, they have to "wake up" before things get moving. In my case, mine "woke up" about 24 hrs after birth- meaning that I passed gas and they could hear strong bowel sounds when they listened to my stomach. But as far as actual poop... that takes a while. And of course, the pain killers just add to the problem.

  • I was expecting it to be awful--(I have bowel issues anyways)--but I kept on top of the colace, and finally was able to poop about 5-6days PP. And surprisingly, it really wasn't that bad. I'm still taking the colace-scared not to, at least until the stitches heal completely.

  • I've been drinking a pint of water an hour for the expressing - seems to help with milk supply? But the bonus is that I've had zero issues with pooping, even with the c-section :)
  • Prunes and prune juice. You'll go like a baby and won't even notice it. I swear buy it and my dr confirmed it was completely safe to take- just figure out what's the right amount is for you before you give your self the runnies;-)
  • Inside baby still but I'm completely and utterly terrified of this.

  • I'm really glad this is posted. I've had nothing going on at all 3 days pp and was starting to get worried about the backup. Guess I'll just keep up with the softeners and wait it out.

  • Labor breathing came in really handy for me ;) and its not like after the first one its back to normal. I'm 8 days PP and today's was finally less serious than before. But the relief trumps the fear!
  • My friend recommended making brownies and putting prunes in them. I didn't get a chance to make them but she swore by them

  • I got a suppository in the hospital, I was embarrassed to ask but I'm soo glad I did lol. I can't imagine a PP poo without one haha!
  • I have a 4th degree tear, and went for the first time yesterday which was 4 days after.  It wasn't as bad as I expected, it was painful but tolerable.  I've been taking colace twice a day.  Today though has been worse.  I've felt like I have to go but when I try, it won't happen.  I'm so scared to push too hard.
