Toddlers: 24 Months+

What is your toddler playing with these days?

I need some fresh ideas for toys and/or games. We are going stir crazy indoors all winter. I just thought I'd see what others little ones are playing with it to sparke some creativity or shopping. Whatever it takes. (I mostly buy used but if I can't find it then I'll break down and buy it new.)

He is really into trains and cars right now. I broke down some old cardboard boxes and drew roads/tracks on them. We also do sensory bins.

The weather has been bad where we live so I check out blogs and pinterest for boredom busting ideas.

  • Play dough and markers are really big here right now.  As are his trains and cars.

Also the guitar - I don't know how feasible this is for you, it's my husband's and he's pretty much just let the kid take over.  My son does daily concerts.  He loves strumming it and singing. He's not as in to his "toy" guitar, but if your son doesn't have a real one to compare, he might be more interested.

And if you can find this, my son got this as a gift for his birthday in October and loves it.  Mickey Mouse Smart Pad.  I think it's a little old for him right now, as he doesn't use it the way its supposed to be used.  It's a set of books and an electronic board.  You're supposed to read through the books and press the corresponding button on the electric board, but he uses them separately.  So he'll ask us to read the books sometimes, and other times he'll play with the electric board so that it becomes like a "see and say" ("press the blue button"  "A") etc.  And it makes sound effects and plays songs.

  • Don't underestimate the power of the good old tent made out of a sheet or a fort with alot of pillows, diving in and playing dolls or reading all of the books you can find. Painting has been a big help lately and she loves drawing so some fresh markers were a hit. We have had a "picnic" in the living room with a big blanket and her stuffed animals in attendence. We have baked cookies and muffins too (with the balance going to our our neighbor!) I can't wait til spring.

  • My son loves superhero figures and any type of toy that allows him to dress up or otherwise pretend that he is a real superhero.  Similarly, my daughter enjoys dressing up and pretending to be a princess superhero complete with Cinderella sparkle shoes and a plastic Captain Hook sword. They play alot of pretend.  Otherwise, they always enjoy coloring and art, so we have alot of crayons, colored pencils, washable markers (that we get out only during art time), stickers, construction paper, etc.
  • Simple puzzles (cardboard ones not the wooden kid ones), her play kitchen, trains, disney pixa cars cars (we bought a bunch second hand), play doh (bought a couple sets that include shapes and molds), crafts (painting, stickers, glitter glue), a small inflatable ball pit.

When we can't go outside I take the cushions off the couch and let her jump! I also set up an obstacle course with the cushions, the ball pit, and a tunnel I bought at gymboree (collapses for easy storage).
  • His train table. Nonstop.
  • We've recently introduced markers and he is obsessed.  Also, he loves any sort of race tracks.  It's hard though because the set we have doesn't really stay together well and that frustrates him a lot.  So he needs one of his mums to help with that game.

  • My daughter has REALLY been into playing Memory and Candy Land. She also loves puzzles, and the foam sticker things. Duplo's and regular legos, perler beads, stamps, foam blocks. I got her a cookie sheet from the dollar store and they had magnets in different shapes and she LOVED sticking them onto the cookie sheet.
