FTM Question about slings

I made a purchase from Destination Maternity online and got a ton of samples/coupons/offers. I got a sleeve of gift cards for websites selling nursing pillows, nursing covers, car seat canopies, and slings. Each one is a separate site and the gift cards are basically for a free item, you just pay S&H (which seems to be between $12-$14 on each). I already ordered the nursing pillow. I did register for a boppy, but for $12 I figure it can't hurt to have an extra that I can throw in the car or leave at my mom's rather than lugging the boppy around. Plus I'm a sucker for "free" stuff. I'm not going to bother with the nursing cover or car seat canopy.

All this to ask, do you think the sling deal is worth it? I know not all babies or moms like them. But for $12 shipping is it worth it to try it out? Here's the site: www.sevenslings.com I usually wouldn't hesitate like this, but I'm trying to be practical. I didn't register for a carrier or sling. Input please?

Re: FTM Question about slings

  • I got a seven sling with my first and t wasn't worth it. It felt way too flimsy for me to be comfortable putting my LO in it. I got a Jellybean for the same price at Burlington and it is 200% nicer.

  • Not a reg here (accidentally clicked on the wrong BMB) but saw this post and had to comment -- that company is a complete scam, and I hate that Destination Maternity/Motherhood Maternity give them credibility by advertising for them.

Their stuff is ALWAYS free. Every few months, "reps" from the company bombard The Bump with their spam. Their products are complete crap and not worth the cost of S&H.

And some have reported their credit card numbers stolen after ordering from the company.
Thanks for the heads up. That's usually the case with these deal, isn't it? We'll see what happens with my nursing pillow purchase. Luckily we have great protection on our credit cards!

  • I got a sling from them when I was pregnant with DS. I ordered the wrong size and ended up unable to use it, but it was nice. $12 is a great price for a sling, but not everyone likes pouch/sash slings. It's a personal preference.

My SIL and several of my friends have redeemed their gift cards and have never had issues.  Maybe it was a random occurrence?

OP - My SIL got the nursing cover and pillow and love both!  She also got the sling and used it around the house because it has a "base" on it, but she still preferred her Moby when going out and about.  It may be cheaper quality, but it's affordable to those that need it. I plan on getting the pillow at least.

  • No, it sucks. In est in a real sling the quality is unmatched.

  • Pouch slings have a high learning curve & I don't recommend them for new to baby wearing people when they come into the store asking about them. You can also find these at consignment sales for 1/2 the price or less. Not worth it at all.

Maybe a dumb question but is a pouch sling the same the same as a ring sling?

Huh. I found the pouch (mine was a Jellybean) to be the most intuitive intro sling. There was a clear seam/cup where the but was supposed to go, and I didn't have to worry about wrapping or sizing anything. It was my gateway sling that helped me become comfortable enough to use my (much more versatile) ring sling.

    Nope.  Here's an explanation: clicky.

Excellent, thanks. I was given a ring sling and a wrap so I'm excited to try both. The ring sling seems like it could give good cover for public BF.
  • I got their sling with DS and it was crap. I did get the carseat canopy this go around and it seems to be okay quality.
