STMs: Cribs

What types of cribs do you STM's suggest? Ive been looking around online and keep seeing these DaVinci ones... are those really popular? Are they good quality? I was warned by some people against getting "convertible" cribs but IMO they seem pretty practical... what do you all like?

Re: STMs: Cribs

  • Why were you warned against convertible cribs?

We have a convertible crib from BRU (I think it is the Baby Essentials brand) and it has worked great so far.  It has 3 different heights, we just moved it to the lowest one, and it easily converts into a toddler bed, and eventually a full-sized bed, and you only really need to purchase the frame.

  • We don't have a convertible crib. The bedrooms in our house are small anyways, so I don't want her to have a full bed when she gets older anyways. My kids are gonna be sharing bunk beds whether they like it or not, lol.

Other than that, though, I won't be much help. My dad made ours, so I don't have experience with any particular brand.

  • We got a Baby Mod one from Walmart, and I love it. It coverts to a toddler bed, but we haven't converted it. The new baby is going into the crib and DS is getting a twin bed. I don't think a convertible is a must have by any means.

  • We have a convertible for this baby, and a crib that can be converted to a toddler bed but not a full for DS. Honestly, we wont use the new crib as a full sized bed. We'll most likely get a bedroom set for each kid that is high quality and will last, once they are old enough to not totally destroy it. The crib we are using for DS has gotten a beating just from him having a sippy of water in there and his pillowpet, and the legs have marks from him playing with toys in his room. There are also teeth marks along the top, but that can be prevented.

If it makes sense to get a convertible, do it! However, I know what our one crib already looks like and there's no way I'd want that in his room forever.
  • I was thinking convertible cribs seemed like a great idea!  What do people say against them??

  • We got a convertible crib/ bedroom set for our daughter and we love it! We will also be getting a convertible crib for this baby.

We didn't get either at babies R us or target or Walmart we went to an actual furniture store.

I think the crib, dresser and mirror cost $1300 total. I think that's pretty cheap for furniture I can get 5 to 10 years out of. But it all depends on your needs/wants

  • We have a convertible from JC Penney and have been very happy with it - if you haven't thought to check there do so!

I don't know who is down on convertibles or why. DS was in his crib/toddler bed until just last week, so 3.5 years, and it has held up great. We will definitely be using it for the new baby and will probably be able to use the headboard/footboard later as well.

if you buy a convertible with the intent to use it later as headboard/footboard make sure you also like how it looks that way. We found we weren't as picky about crib looks but were much pickier about how they looked converted.

  • We have the Graco Lauren but never used it as a convertible for DS. We went straight to a twin bed with him so we'd have the crib available for LO. Eventually they will probably share a room so we may then use the toddler bed but we'll see.
  • We bought a graco Lauren and it's working perfectly for us! I found a coordinating changing table and glider on Craigslist for $50 each so that was awesome.

  • Got a Graco one for around $150 maybe and love it. It was high on consumer reports, is a convertible (though we don't plan to use it that way, maybe for LO2 but not DD), and it was cheap. I don't feel pressure to use it as a full size bed frame like it can be since it was so cheap. We'll probably just sell it as a crib when both are done with cribs.

  • I have a Delta crib from Target, it was under $150. It looks great & has held up well. It does convert to a toddler bed, but we're planning to keep it as a crib for new LO.
  • We have a convertible for dd and will get one for this baby. We have the Graco Sarah for dd and love it! For this baby we are planning on getting the Baby Mod Modena. Davinci and baby mod are the same company (as is babyletto and million dollar baby) and they all have come highly recommended.

  • We're getting the DaVinci Kalani convertible crib although I don't plan on using it as a full size bed. I like that it come with the toddler rail though. We're getting it at Kohl's because with coupons & free shipping it's a really great price.
  • We got Graco cribs. They are really affordable and very sturdy. No complaints here!

    1st pregnancy: m/c began 1/12/09 d&c 1/13/09 8wks. Baby stopped growing at about 6wks.

  • We have a convertable crib for my DS that we are passing down to the baby. We wanted solid wood which is sort of hard to find, so ours is from Romina. DS is getting a twin bed (also solid wood) and when the baby outgrows the toddler bed, we may convert to full size for my DS.
  • We bought a Delta convertible crib for our first, however, I already have an amazing bedroom suit in the room we are moving DS in so we will keep the crib as is for the new LO! I researched bed rails for the full size bed we are moving my 15 mo old to
  • With our first set of twins, we got two Graco cribs, I think Lauren, b/c we really didn't wanna spend a crazy amount. So, we used one of those cribs with DD and it's been great! These twins will use those two cribs, and we're getting DD a convertible b/c this way, when we want her to use a big girl bed, it's there instead of buying her a new bed in like a year.

  • Definitely agree with and wanted to emphasize what @2ag said about not waiting too long to buy the conversion kit for your crib if you plan to use it as i have too many friends who waited and then couldn't get it because it got discontinued. I guess they change crib lines frequently so it is not unusual.

  • We got our crib from BRU. I think its baby cache, I can't remember exactly. It's a convertible, but I don't know how long we will use it. DS now has a twin bed set, and DS2 will use this crib and get his own bedroom set.

  • I'm sure people warn you of a convertible because if you had more kids, you may not end up converting the crib to begin with. That's the big complaint around here.

I didn't go with a full size convertible. I went with one that converts to a toddler bed. As a pp said, I don't want DD going to a full size bed. We don't have the room for that. We bought DD a toddler bed and LO will have the crib that converts to another toddler bed. We have an IKEA crib and love it.

  • We purchased a really nice set of Munire furniture for DS. My only complaint is that it's huge but it's serving it's purpose and got us through the crib, toddler bed, and now full size bed stages. For the twins, I am looking at the Graco Sarah. They are going to share a room for now so I need something more compact. Plus I have heard great things about Graco and you can't beat the price!

  • We have a Graco crib we got at Target when my first was a baby.  It is cute and has held up great--my son sleeps in it now, and we will put baby #3 in it when he arrives.  It's convertible but we never have converted it since it has just gone from baby to baby.  I'll actually be sad when we have to finally retire it for good.

  • We bought the Davinci Kalani mini crib for DD2 but we recently got her the full sized one so the next baby will sleep in the mini crib. They are sharing a room so I wanted it to match otherwise I might have looked for a different crib but I do like the look of it and so far I feel the quality has been good!

  • Thank you all!! It sounds like the convertible cribs will work for us. I had no clue it they wouldn't come with everything they need to "convert"... That's so strange! So I'm glad you all pointed it out. Now I know what to get. I love this board! :)

  • We also have a Delta from Target. I can't find the conversion rails anywhere but Amazon offers a wonderful toddler rail that works when little one is ready for some independence. The crib was on sale for 175 and we paid 25 for the rail. FYI it's the mattress that was crazy priced! We bought a infant sided that flips to toddler sided and it was almost 300!
  • We have a Ben & Franklin Liberty crib (https://www.franklinandben.com/liberty-3-in-1-convertible-crib/) . I knew I wanted a convertible jenny lind style crib and this (and a very expensive one from Land of Nod) was the only that I could find. I love it though and am so happy that we ended up with it. Ours came with the rail so it converts without having to buy anything additional. Now I am looking for another crib since DD will only be 19-20 months when this baby is born and I don't want to rush her out of her crib especially since it converts to a toddler bed.

  • We have a graco lauren (convertible) and a graco charleston.  I just bought the lauren model for LO2 on craigslist for $60!  I was really excited to find a current model crib on craiglist, especially one so similar to our first one.  We haven't converted DD into the toddler bed yet, but we have never had any issues with the crib.

huh? What's the difference? We just used the same mattress for crib and toddler bed with no complaints or problems from DS. Is this something new-ish? Don't remember seeing or hearing about it 4 yrs ago when picking a mattress.

Our crib mattress wore out & we had to buy a new mattress. It cost us about $80.

I've never heard of a toddler/infant side mattress. I wonder if the different sides are firmer/softer maybe?

  • Were getting the graco lauren as well because its very highly rated on consumer reports (im a CR junkie) glad to see people like it IRL!

We have a pottery barn mattress that has a toddler/infant side. Infant side is firmer while toddler side is softer! I didn't pick out the mattress as it was a gift but I think it was only $130 or so. I don't think the two sides are necessary just a perk...
  • We have two organic cotton, soy foam, green guard mattresses that are double sided and the most recent one only cost us $120. Costco. Love it. Nice mattresses don't have to cost a million.
  • I have both of my DS in DaVinci cribs. My 5 yr old has his converted to the full size bed. I love them and have had zero issues with either beds.
  • We have the Graco Lauren. Cheap, has worn relatively well and was useful to convert to a toddler bed. DS will be out of it before the baby arrives, so we won't need to buy another one, but I would if we needed to.

  • We have 2 DaVinci Kalani's. Love them! And although my kids never tolerated the "toddler bed" function. We have one of them set up as a full bed in our spare bedroom.
