EBF twin moms - How do I leave the house for 5 hours?

I've been EBF my twins. They are 6 weeks now and will be 7 weeks when I have to leave the house for 5 hours during the day. I'll have bottles handy for them, but any advice on what and how to coordinate this outing?

Should I plan to pump before and after? during?  (I wonder about before because I've heard pumping just stimulates more milk making)

Do you seriously bring your pump in style with you to a restaurant?

Any advice, personal anecdotes or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Re: EBF twin moms - How do I leave the house for 5 hours?

  • If you have flexibility for when you leave, leave right after you feed them. I wouldn't pump while you're gone but you will likely be uncomfortable by the time you get home. Assuming you'll miss one feeding while gone in this scenario, I'd either pump until empty when you get back and bottle feed the next feeding or pump for relief and leave enough in your boobs for their next feeding.

If you don't have flexibility when leaving, I'd still pump right before leaving if you don't plan on pumping while you're gone.

If you're driving and are worried about your supply, I'd pump in the car at an inconspicuous time if that's possible. If you don't have supply problems I wouldn't worry about one time going 5 hours.

Once you do this once or twice, you'll figure out what's best for you. I experimented with a few diff options before figuring out what works best for me and my kiddos.

  • I would bring my PISA and pump when babies feed. I have the car charger thing and would just do it in my car (have who ever is watching them text you when they feed an pump then.) I would also nurse right before leaving and as soon as I was with babies again. 7 weeks your prolactin levels are still leveling out so milk production *can* be effected. That's also the week in which a lot of babies start their 2 month cluster feed so any extra pumping won't hurt. I would also plan around their nap schedule so they will be sleeping a good portion of the time you will be away.

  • You will probably be ok to just feed them before you leave and then feed them when you get back. Is this a regular thing or just a one time thing? You will likely be uncomfortable but you should be just fine to wait without having to worry about pumping etc.

  • Thank you!!! All good info. I am walking to my destination so I am going to try just skipping a feeding and pumping before and after!
